Quarterfinals set at NCAA Championships
CMU sits 4th in team standings after Day 1

2008 NCAA Championships
March 20-22  -  St Louis, MO

3/20 - The second round of the NCAA tournament was not quite as nice for Tom Borelli's CMU Chippewas as the opening round was, but the Chipps still sit 4th in the overall team standings heading into Day 2 on Friday.  CMU advanced all 9 of their wrestlers to the 2nd round and only 4 continued on the quarterfinals.

Brandon Sinnott, Christian Sinnott, Wynn Michalak, and Bubba Gritter all won their second round bouts to move on.  Brandon Sinnott narrowly escaped an upset as he survived an overtime thriller with MAC rival Duke Burke of Northern Illinois at 174lbs.  The larger Sinnott, Chrisitian, won 6-3 to advance at 184 while Michalak crusied with a first period fall and Gritter shuout the #9 seed Jermail Porter of Kent State 3-0.  Gritter will now meet #1 seeded Dustin Fox of Northwestern in tommorow's 285lb quarterfinal.

MSU's #1 seeded Franklin Gomez also survived a scare at 133lbs as he used 4 seconds of riding time advantage to win over Ohio State's Reece Humphrey in the tiebreaker.  Gomez is now slated for a rematch with Mack Reiter of Minnesota who he beat in a home dual earlier this season.

The University of Michigan matched CMU's 4 quarterfinals with a 4 of their own.  Kellen Russell, Josh Churella, Eric Tannenbaum, and Steve Luke all won their second round matches with relative ease for the Wolverines.  Tyrel Todd, the #3 seed at 184lbs, was the victim of one of the bigger upsets of the round as he lost 7-5 to Nebraska's Vince Jones.

Three former Davison high school standouts made the quarterfinals as Paul Donahoe, Brent Metcalf, and Jon Reader all won their 2nd round matches.  All three men picked up decisive wins to advance, most notably Reader who handled 12th seed Kurt Gross of Kent State 15-2.

Former Lapeer West 4x state champ Roger Kish of Minnesota made the quarterfinals as well, where he will meet up with arch nemesis and top seeded Jake Varner of Iowa State.
