DCC, Lakeshore, Lowell and Rockford Clash In Quad

12/23 - On Wednesday night some of the state's top talent collided in the Rockford gym for one of the seasons toughest quad meets.  In attendance were perennial Division 1 powers Detroit Catholic Central and Rockford as well as Division 2 powerhouses Lowell and Stevensville Lakeshore.  It was a very competitive night of wrestling that featured some excellent matches in all four dual meets that took place.

One of the nights first duals featured a rematch of last year's Division 1 State Finals.  The returning champions Detroit Catholic Central took on returning runner-up Rockford in a heated dual.  DCC won nine of the dual's first ten matches to jump out to a commanding 42-3 lead.  Leading the way for Division 1's top ranked Shamrocks was there talented group of lower weights.  Second ranked Malik Amine (112) and returning state placer TJ Fagan (119) both scored close victories that helped DCC gain the early lead.  Amine defeated Nate Rojas of Rockford by a score of 8-6 and Fagan won a tight battle with returning state placer Tyler Vanrooyen by a score of 4-3.  Rockford was able to win a few more matches near the end of the dual but the Shamrocks proved to be too much for the eighth ranked Rams, winning by a final score of 48-9.

While DCC and Rockford where battling, Division 2 powers Lowell and Stevensville Lakeshore squared off on the other side of the gym.  Lowell, who is still missing a few wrestlers due to football season, was still able
to put on an impressive performance against second ranked Lakeshore.  The Red Arrows, currently ranked fourth in Division 2, put up big points on the Lancers and came away with a 52-12 victory.  It was an impressive
victory for Lowell and was a good indicator that they will be right in the hunt at the Division 2 State Finals this February.

Fresh off of a convincing win over Rockford, Detroit Catholic Central went up against Stevensville Lakeshore in a battle of highly ranked teams.  Lakeshore started the dual well, scoring two pins in the first two matches to jump out to a quick 12-0 leading.  DCC responded with three consecutive pins, but at 130 pounds Lakeshore's Sam Hanau scored a big 7-0 win over D1 #4 Logan Marcicki to keep the dual close.  However the Shamrocks depth appeared to be too much for Lakeshore as they were able to win seven consecutive matches down the stretch to secure a 52-19 victory.

In the other final dual of the night, Lowell got a chance to avenge last years regional loss to Rockford.  The two teams battled back and forth in the lower weights, with several close swing matches.  Going into the 135 pound match the Red Arrows held a 15-12 lead.  Thanks to some help from the middleweights Lowell was able to pick up some much needed points to increase their lead to 22-12.  The Rams were able to make a late comeback attempt thanks to big wins at 145 and 152, however Lowell ultimately proved to be too much winning by a final score of 38-21.

It was a great night of wrestling that saw some of the state's premier talent battling in hard fought dual meets.  Detroit Catholic Central and Lowell both emerged from the night 2-0.  It was a particularly big night for Lowell who was able to upset second ranked Stevensville Lakeshore and avenge last year's regional loss to Rockford in the same quad meet.  Check the dual meet results page for box scores.
