Donahoe, Gomez, Kendle among MSU Open Champs
11/11 - The Michigan State Open attracted some of the best college wrestlers in the
country to East Lansing last weekend.
Three Michigan State grapplers won touranment titles, including Franklin Gomez and
Rex Kendle in the Open Division. Gomez, who is currently ranked 3rd nationally, won
the 133lb crown in dominant fashion as his closest match of the day was a 10-3 finals
win over Kyle Hutter of Old Dominion. Kendle was one of the surprises of the tournament
as he knocked off 12th ranked Chris Brown of Old Dominion in the 165lb finals 6-4.
Kendle, a senior for MSU, is returning at 165lbs after starting the past two seasons.
The 3rd Spartan to win his weight was Highland Park native Anthony Jones, who won
the 157lb title in the freshman/sophomore division.
Former Davison 3x state champ Paul Donahoe competed for the first time in his home
state since winning the NCAA championship in Auburn Hills two years ago and his
returng was a grand one as he stormed through a tough 125lb weight class in the open
division. Donahoe, who was competing for Edinboro, controlled fellow all-american Brandon Precin of Northwestern in the finals with a 4-1 decision.
Central Michigan and Michigan did not bring the majority of their starters, however, CMU's true freshman Ben Bennett was in attendance, as he finished 4th at 174 in the open division. Bennett fell to nationally ranked Dave Erwin of Penn State in the semifinals and then lost to NCAA Qualifier and Davison native Trevor Perry of Indiana in the 3rd place bout.
A number of high school wrestlers came out to try their luck in the freshman/sophomore division. 2x state champ Dan Yates of Hesperia was the highest finishing Michigan prep as he took 2nd at 165lbs. Yates lost 5-0 to Tommy Weinkam of Ohio in the finals. Allegan junior John Rizgallah put in an impressive performance as well, finishing 3rd at 174lbs. Rizgallah knocked off MSU freshman and former Clarkston standout Bryant Craft in the 3rd place match 5-3.
