Olivet College posts 2-1 record at Comet Duals

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team posted a 2-1 record at the 2009 O.C. Comet Duals today inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. In their first match, the Comets came-from-behind to beat Trine (Ind.) University, 20-18. Olivet then fell to Heidelberg (Ohio) University, 24-10, and wrapped-up the day with a 23-12 win over Grand Valley State University.

In the match against Trine, the teams split the 10 matches. After the Thunder won the 125-pound match by minor decision, junior Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) tied the match at 3-3 with an 11-8 win at 133 pounds. Olivet grabbed an 8-3 lead when junior Vince Tucker (Clio) recorded a 17-2 technical fall at 141 pounds. Trine won the next three matches to take a 13-8 lead in the team score.

The Comets cut their deficit to two points, 13-11, after sophomore Eddie Manier (Inkster/John Glenn) won, 12-7 at 174 pounds. The Thunder extended their lead to 18-11 with a technical fall win at 184 pounds. At 197 pounds, senior Joe Bargerstock (Livonia/Churchill) got a takedown in overtime to win the match 6-4 and make the team score, 18-14. In the 285-pound match, freshman Logan Renas (Big Rapids) provided the winning points, as he recorded a third-period pin in 6:22.

Against Heidelberg, Tucker moved up one weight class to 149 pounds, and won 18-3. The only other win was by Renas, who pinned his opponent in 3:36.

Against Grand Valley, sophomore Justin Fleeson (Belleville) got the Comets off to a great start with a 5-1 win at 125 pounds. The Lakers tied the match at 3-3 with a win at 133 pounds. Freshman Kenny Richmond (Brighton) put Olivet ahead 6-3 with a 7-2 win at 141 pounds. Tucker posted his second technical fall win at 149 pounds. Sophomore Justin Jaynes (Richmond) added three more points to the team score with a 6-3 win at 165 pounds. Manier won his second match of the day with a 5-0 win at 174 pounds. Following a Grand Valley pin at 184 pounds, Bargerstock held off his opponent in the final seconds to squeeze out a 9-7 win at 197 pounds.

Olivet is now idle until Saturday, Dec. 5, when it participates in the Ohio Northern University Open Meet. Action at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio, gets started at 9 a.m.
