Metcalf and Trice win Midlands Title; Chipps finish 3rd

2009 Midlands Championships - Day 2

12/30 - College wrestling's most notable regular season

tournament wrapped up tonight in Evanston, IL and

surprise, surprise, Davison native Brent Metcalf was

the man of the night.

The 2008 NCAA Champion and Dan Hodge Award

winner added some more hardware to his trophy case

as he dominated the 149lb weight class and was

named the Dan Gable Tournament Outstanding

Wrestler. The former 4x Michigan State Champ also

earned the high scorer award as he raked in 32.5 team

points for his top ranked Iowa Hawkeye squad that won

the team title.

Central Michigan finished 3rd in the team standings

behind 7 individual placewinners, including 285lb champion Jarod Trice. Trice wrestled well above his #8 seed, capping off his impressive run with a 3-2 finals win over 5th ranked Dave Zabriskie of Iowa State. Trice, who is currently ranked 11th in the nation at heavyweight, also upended 4th ranked Dom Bradley in the semifinals and placed over the #3, #7, and #8 ranked wrestlers in his weight class.

Central Michigan freshman Ben Bennett fell 6-1 in the 174lb finals to #2 ranked Jay Borschel of Iowa. Former Davison state champ Jon Reader lost his finals match as well, dropping a 3-2 overtime loss to #2 ranked Andrew Howe of Wisconsin.

The other 5 Chippewas to place in their respective weights were Matt Steintrager (125), Anthony D'alie (149), Steve Brown (157), Tyler Grayson (165), and Eric Cubberly (165). Returning All-Americans Scotti Sentes (133) and Mike Miller (184) were both eliminated prior to the medal rounds.

Michigan State finished 14th overall without the services of returning National Champ Franklin Gomez who did not compete. David Cheza was the lone Spartan placer, finishing 8th at 149lbs.
