Gomez, Biondo shine at Michigan State Open
11/16 - The Michigan State Open has been one of the
most competetive college preseason tournaments for
the past two decades and that continued last weekend
as some of the Midwest's best collegiate grapplers
converged on the Jenison Fieldhouse in East Lansing.
The event was a virtual showcase of Michigan wrestling
as every Michigan collegiate program was represented
as well as a handful of Michigan natives who traveled
out-of-state for college but came back this weekend for
the Open. In addition, many high schoolers entered
and competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division.
Michigan and Michigan State each crowned a
champion in the Open division as #1 ranked returning
National Champ Franklin Gomez of MSU won the 133lb
weight class and 16th ranked Anthony Biondo of
Michigan went away with the 197lb title.
Gomez began his road for a repeat title in relatively dominant fashion as he scored a 6-0 shutout win in the finals over 20th Tristan Deshazer of Northern Illinois. Michigan's Zac Stevens gave Gomez arguably his toughest match of the day, losing 8-3 in the semifinals. Stevens went on to finish 3rd.
Biondo edged AJ Kisell of Purdue in the finals, a wrestler with whom he split a pair of matches last season. This marks the 2nd weekend in a row for Biondo to make an Open finals as he finished 2nd at EMU last week.
Five Michiganders won titles in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, two Spartans, two EMU Eagles, and one Michigan Wolverine.
Dan Yates of Michigan was the victor in one of the best finals matches of the Freshman/Sophomore division as he outgunned Ohio state champ Kyle Lang of Ohio University 6-1 in the finals. Click here to watch the Yates-Lang finals match.
Michigan State true freshman Dan Osterman won his second consecutive tournament title after winning the EMU Open last weekend. Osterman stormed through the 133lb weight class before receiving an injury default in the finals.
The second Spartan to win was redshirt freshman Bryant Craft, who won the 174lb championship with a 4-2 finals win over JT Jenkins of Indianapolis.
Mike LeHolm and Nick Whitenburg finished atop their respective weight classes for Eastern Michigan. LeHolm won the 141lb championship with a 5-3 finals win over Nick Lafevre of The Citadel. Whitenburg, meanwhile, took home the 184lb title with a finals fall over Allegan senior and MSU recruit John Rizgallah.
