Allegan native Simaz wins Scuffle, two Wolverines place

2009 Southern Scuffle
Greensboro, NC

12/30 - The Southern Scuffle wrapped up in Greensboro, NC today and
while the University of Michigan was the only Michigan school in
attendance, it was a former Michigander who traveled out of state for
school that stole the show.

Former Allegan three time state champ Cam Simaz lived up to his #1 seed,
winning the 197lb Scuffle title with a 12-4 major decision finals win over
Erick Schuth of Ohio.  Simaz, who was an all-american last year in his
freshman campaign at Cornell, was dominant throughout the tournament,
going 5-0 with three major decisions, a fall, and an 18-0 technical fall.

The University of Michigan finished 14th in the 32 team field behind the
efforts of two wrestlers placing in the top 8.  Junior captain Anthony Biondo
led the way with a 3rd place finish at 197lbs.  Biondo fell to Schuth in the
semifinals, but bounced back with two consolation wins to finish 3rd.
Former Jenison standout David Johnson was the only other Wolverine
placer, finishing 8th at 157lbs.

Another Michigander who made the medal stand was Davison native Trevor Perry, who finished 4th at 174lbs for Indiana University.

Cornell ran away with the overall team title, edging Minnesota by 12.5 points.  Click below for full brackets.
