Muskegon places 7 wrestlers at Concordia Open

11/21 - The Jayhawks took to the mat in Wisconsin for the Concordia Open on Saturday with one thing on their minds; Respect.  With that in mind, the wrestlers battled through brackets that were up to 50 wrestlers deep.  25 colleges from 8 different states were represented and all but two were 4 year schools.

"I told the kids before we took the mat today that the word of the day was 'Respect,'" said head coach Larry Haughn.  "We were one of just two junior colleges here and nobody but us was expecting much.  We had a pretty good team last year and only had one wrestler place and he finished sixth.  The showing here today was even better than anticipated, I am so proud of all of our young men."

The Jayhawks were highlighted by a spectacular day by 141 pound freshman phenom Sean Turner.  Turner rolled through the tournament with three falls and two major decisions, knocking off the number 4 and number 1 seeds enroute to the finals.  He needed just 18 seconds to finish his opponent in the championship match.  "I don't think he took me seriously, which motivated me even more," exclaimed Turner after his finals victory.

Another great day was put in by Sophomore Trent Flegel at 197 pounds.  Flegel, who was denied a seed in the tournament shrugged it off by knocking off the number 5 seed, the number 4 seed and the number 1 seed en route to his championship appearance where he dropped a heartbreak decision to Billy Malone of North Central College.

MCC placed 5 other wrestlers, Brad Jones (133) finished 8th, Luke Faultersack (141) finished 8th, Rafael Rodriguez (165) finished 5th, Mat Henry (174) finished 7th and Jacob Brown (174) finished 8th.
