Jenison Fieldhouse was a Michigan wrestling showcase today in East Lansing as the venue was filled with household names from the Michigan wrestling community. There were five wrestlers with Michigan ties who were crowned champions.
A pair of Chippewa freshman nabbed the first tourney titles of their careers as former state champs Jeff Shutich of Rockford and Jarod Trice of Highland Park won the freshman/sophomore crowns at 133 and 285lbs, respectively. Also winning a title in the freshman/sophomore division was Lakewood native Eddie Phillips (UM) at 197.
MSU sophomore Franklin Gomez's transition to 133 is off to a good start as the former 125lber won the open division with a finals win over returning Big 10 runner up Andre Hernandez of Indiana. CMU senior Ben Kelto of Ispheming made it two in a row as he followed up his EMU open title with a win today in the open division at 184lbs.
There were 3 Michigan preps who tried their luck against the college guys and came away with a placing. State champs Jacob Burge of Mason and Ben Bennett of Rockford placed 4th and 6th at 174lbs in freshman/sophomore, respectively. In a battle of two of Michigan's best preps, Burge defeated Bennett in the consolation semis 4-0. East Kentwood senior Jake Bohn also placed in the freshman/sophomore division, taking 6th at 165lbs.
