Top seniors on display at MWA Classic

6/19 - The innagural MWA Classic Senior All-Star Dual Meet took place Wednesday night in Hartland and some of Michigan's best were on display.

The dual started and ended with Mason 2x state and Sr National All-American Jacob Burge as Burge wrestled both 171 and 189lbs.  South Haven's Celic Bell was a late scratch at 189lbs so Burge bumped up to wrestle 2x state placer Matt Skrzypczak of Bay City Central.  Burge, who is headed for NC State in the fall, started the dual off with a first period pin over Skrzypczak and ended the night with a 24-9 tech fall over Trenton's Max Sall.

In one of the best matches of the night Sr National Runner Up Travis Pettengill of Kearsley held off Dundee state champ Jimmy Rowe for a win at 215lbs. With the match tied at 2-2 going into the third period, Pettengill opened the match up with a couple takedowns to seal the win 7-3.

Another Senior National All-American to turn in an impressive performance was Monroe's Zac Stevens at 125lbs.  Stevens showed why is ranked among the best in the country as he cruised to a 20-5 technical fall over Grand Haven's 2x state placer Dan Sabin.

The home town crowd got a good showing from both Hartland wrestlers in the classic as Jeremy Bommarito and DJ Charneski both picked up big wins.  Bommarito, who is a 2x D1 state champ, won the battle of State Champs as he defeated the D2 champ Deven Brown of Airport 8-0.  Charneski muscled over Oscoda's Monte Fouchey for a pin at 285lbs.

State champs also squared off at 119, 125, and 135lbs.  At 119 it was a battle of 2007 champs with Dexter's Bret Marsh and Marlette's Jon Hayward.  Marsh, a D2 champ, blanked the D4 champ Hayward by a score of 7-0.

The D2 and D4 champs from this year met at 125lbs and their match lived up to the hype as it was D2 champ Steve Light of St Clair Shores who came out on top over Addison's 2x D4 champ Mykel Sumner.

The 135lb match saw 2x D4 champ Cody Dunn of Leslie meet up with 2007 D2 champ Garrett Rozeboom of Mason.  Rozeboom won the battle of Ingham County stars by a score of 7-4.

This year's MWA Classic was a great night of wrestling that put some of Michigan's best seniors on display.  In the first year of existence the Classic is already a sucess and is an indicator of how much wrestling has grown and can continue to evolve here in Michigan.
