2008 TEAM STATE FINALS PREVIEW

Division 3

Quarterfinal Matchups:
#4 Remus Chippewa Hills (31-2) vs. #3 Saginaw Swan Valley (33-1)
#8 Corunna (27-5) vs. #2 Dundee  (23-3)
Gladstone (10-3) vs. #1 Goodrich (42-2)
Allendale (23-5) vs. #6 Lake Odessa Lakewood (29-5)

Goodrich has been on fire all year and they have to be much deeper than most D3 squads, competing well against bigger schools all year long.  Their road to the finals doesn't appear to be daunting and most people want to see a Goodrich/Dundee finals in D3.  Dundee has a much tougher road than Goodrich as they will first have a tough Corunna team that took out Durand to get here and then their semi match with CH/SV should be a good dual as well.  CH/SV should be a great QF match and is a rematch as they met early in the season, with Swan Valley winnning 38-31.  Here is a look at the duals to watch for D3:

#3 Swan Valley vs #4 Chippewa Hills (Quarterfinals)
103 - #1 BJ Suitor (SV) vs Devane Dodgens (CH)
112 - #1 Darius Wass (SV) vs ??
119 - #1 Jared Germaine/Chris Theile (SV) vs Adam Place/Elvis Peacock (CH)
125 - Chris Thiele/Jerry Flores (SV) vs Darrin Crowder/Place/Peacock (CH)
130 - #6 Matt Beebe/Jerry Flores (SV) vs Eric Sackett (CH)
135 - #6 Beebe vs Zach Crowder (CH)
140 -  #2 Jake Jeske (SV) vs ??
145 - Joe Karas (SV) 23-15 vs Mike Ohearn (CH) 28-11
152 - Jake Schirmer (SV) 19-12 vs Brandon Lange (CH) 33-13
160 - Branden Bell (SV) 38-11 vs Jordan Young (CH)
171 - Kyle Sroebel (SV) 18-17  vs Billy Fate (CH)
189 - Robert Coon (SV) 8-19 vs Kevin Smith (CH)
215 - Lumpsen (SV) vs Colt Miller/Anthony Blankenship 26-7 (CH)
285 - Kreh (SV) vs Wilson/Anthony Blankenship (CH)
There is alot that could change with matchups, but the way it looks is Swan Valley will pretty much run the lightweights and Chippewa Hills should sweep the upperweights.  103-140 should be all Swan Valley, then 145-285 could be all Chippewa Hills.  That means that bonus points may be the difference in this dual.  If Chippewa Hills can pick up a win somewhere at 125 or 130 then that could seal the deal.

#1 Goodrich vs #2 Dundee (Finals)
103 - #9 CC Weber/Kristi Garr (G) vs #2 Chris Rau (D)
112 - #9 Weber/Garr (G) vs Joe Rendina/#10 Brandon Treharne (D)
119 - #10 David Garr (G) vs #5 Josh White (D)
125 - #2 Kirk Britton (G) vs #3 Pete Rendina (D)
130 - #2 Grant Overcashier (G) vs Brandon Desbrough (D)
135 - #1 Mark Weber (G) vs #8 Brad Wade (D)
140 - #9 Joe Hopkins (G) vs Scottie Snook (D) 24-19
145 - #6 Nick Gatchell (G) vs Jon Hartline (D) 12-21
152 - Jared Labelle (G) vs Trevor Straub (D)
160 - Drew Weil (G) 36-15 vs #1 Chris Eggert (D)
171 - #3 Kyle March (G) vs Jaryd Gotts (D)
189 - #2 Kyler Elsworth (G) vs ?? (D)
215 - Nick Lovell (G) vs #1 Jimmy Rowe (D)
285 - ??? (G) vs ??? (D)
Looking at this at you have to go "wow", this is a true slugfest of two stacked teams.  Looking at the matchups you have to give Goodrich 6 weights (130, 135, 140, 145, 171, 189) and Dundee is favored in 6 as well (103, 112, 119, 152, 160, 215).  That means there is two toss ups and they are crucial!  The two matches that we have tagged as toss ups are completely different in that 125 is a battle of state title contenders and 285 is a battle of nobodys as we have no clue about either team's heavyweight.  Britton upset reiging champ Rendina last week at regionals and a repeat win from him could seal the deal for Goodrich.  Anohter question mark for Dundee is the return of freshman phenom Joe Rendina, who was injured prior to districts and has been out for a while. If Rendina returns it will guarantee bonus points for Dundee at 112, however, his replacemen Treharne has done well and they should get a big win at 112 with or without J Rendina.  Goodrich could bump Britton away from Rendina as well, which would cause for a Gatchell/Straub matchup at 152 that would be a toss up as well.  Here is how we see the dual going with these matchups:
103 - Rau majdec (4-0 D); 112 - Rendina pin (10-0 D); 119 - White dec (13-0 D); 125 - Rendina dec (16-0 D); 130 - Overcashier tfall (16-5 D); 135 - Weber majdec (16-9 D); 140 - Hopkins maj dec (16-13 D); 145 - Gatchell pin (19-16 G); 152 - Straub dec (19-19); 160 - Eggert majdec (23-19 D); 171 - March majdec (23-23)' 189 - Elsworth pin (29-23 G); 215 - Rowe pin (29-29); 285 - ????
With this scenario the dual would depend on the 285lb match.  We cant make a prediction on 285 as we have no information, but without heavyweight the dual is a deadlock 29-29 tie.  Should be fun!
