Michigan sits 3rd after Day 1 of Sr Nationals

3/28 - When you speak of high school wrestling in this country the dominant states that come to mind are Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California.  Well, after day 1 of the senior nationals the state of Michigan is ahead of all three of thos teams.  The only two states that have outscored Michigan after the first day are New Jersey and New York.  Sitting third, the Great Lakes state is currently 2 points behind first place New York.

They wrestled two rounds of championship action today in Virginia a total of 14 Michigan wrestlers have advanced to the championship round of 16 and are still alive for a shot at the national title. 

One of the most notable matchups coming tommorow morning in the round of 16 is at 171lbs where Ben Bennett of Rockford, currently ranked #6 nationally, will square off with 11th ranked Travis Rutt of Minnesota.  Bennett, a 3x state champ, rattled off two tech falls to open his tournament.

Michigan's other nationally ranked wrestlers Mark Weber, Jacob Burge, LJ Helbig, Travis Pettengill, Marcel Dubose, and Bryan Rickard are all still alive in the championship bracket as well.
