4 Michiganders advance to 2nd day of FILA Cadet Freestyle
4/25 - After the first day of action at the FILA Cadet National Freestyle
Championships in Akron, Ohio four Michigan preps remain alive. Three freshman
state champions, Freddie Rodriguez, Alec Mooradian, and Taylor Massa, have
locked up all-american honors while state placer Tyler Humes needs one win
tommorow morning to earn a spot in the Top 6.
Massa, who was a Cadet Freestyle national champ last year, drew a formidable
first round opponent this morning in the likes of Zach Skates of Oklahoma. Skates
was a double cadet all-american last year in Fargo, placing 3rd in freestyle, and he
was an Oklahoma state champ this year as well. However, Massa proved too much
for Skates, downing him in straight periods 5-1, 2-1. After that Massa cruised,
winning 5 matches in a row, all by fall. Massa will have another returning Cadet
Freestyle all-american first thing tommorow morning as he will square off Isiah
Meade of Delaware. If he wins that match, Massa will secure a spot in the 152lb
finals.
Returning Cadet Freestyle National runner-up Freddie Rodriguez went 3-0 today at
101.25lbs. Rodriguez will wrestle Jesse Holton of New York tommorow morning
and may have one more bout after that to earn a spot in the finals.
Alec Mooradian's debut on the national freestyle scene was strong this morning. The DCC freshman went 4-1 on the day at 119lbs, however, he now controls his own destiny as he enters a 3-man round robin with Nick Brascetta of Ohio and Nico Megadulis of Pennsylvania. His round robin is a star studded one as Brascetta and Megadulis are both nationally ranked state champions. Megadulis ended the year ranked 5th nationally at 112lbs while Brascetta finished the year as the #1 ranked 103lber in the country by Amateur Wrestling News. Mooradian will wreslte Megadulis first thing in the morning then Brascetta. If he can pull out two victories in will land him a spot in the finals.
Stevensille Lakeshore junior Tyler Humes stormed back after losing his opening round bout to Jahwon Akui of Illinois. Humes lost a three period affair with Akui, who was a Cadet Freestyle National Champion a year ago, before rattling off 4 straight victories at 167.5lbs including a three period win over reigning Cadet Greco National Champ and Florida state champ Levi Clemons. Humes will need a win in the morning over Seth Thomas of Oregon to ensure a spot in the top 6. Thomas was a double cadet all-american in Fargo last year, placing third in both styles, losing to only Taylor Massa in freestyle.
Action will resume tommorow morning and they will wrestle through the finals, check back for results.
