Dorulla shines with win at USAW Preseason Nationals
7 Michigan preps place in Top 8

10/25/2008

Des Moines, IA - 12 Michigan high schoolers made the trip to Iowa this
weekend for the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals.  In the first year of the
event, the Preseason Nationals attracted a large field with some of the
country's top preps in what was a challenging and star-studded event.

8 Michiganders finished in the top 8 of their respective weights, including
Jake Dorulla of Rockford, who won the 171lb championship.  Dorulla entered
the tournament as the #1 seed and lived up to that honor as he stormed
through his half of the bracket with two pins and a 10-2 major decision to
advance to the finals.  In the quarterfinals Dorulla picked up a fall over Cadet
greco all-american Zack Rutt of Minnesota, then in the finals he knocked off
Iowa state runner-up Kyven Gadson 7-3 to finish the day 4-0 and the 171lb
champion.

Two other Michigan grapplers placed in the 171lb bracket as John Rizgallah
of Allegan edged Dorulla's Rockford teammate Jake Johnson 1-0 in the 3rd
place finals.  Rizgallah entered the tournament as the #2 seed and fell in
the semifinals to Gadson while Johnson stormed all the way back to the
consolation finals after losing in the 2nd round.

Dorulla was the only champion from Michigan and the only other finalist was Mason sophomore Conor Youtsey, who finished runner-up at 119lbs.  Youtsey came in as the 5th seed and picked up three falls to open up the day before edging Iowa state runner-up and #1 seed Levi Wolfensperger 1-0 in the semifinals.  In the finals Youtsey's run came to an end as he lost to Junior National freestyle all-american Eric Brooks of Indiana 11-5.

Greenville's 2x state champ Tyler Keselring finished 3rd in what was arguably the deepest weight of the tournament.  Wrestling at 125lbs, Keselring was seeded 4th in a weight that featured two wrestlers that were cadet freestyle all-americans last summer.  After knocking off Minnesota state runner up Bronson Steuber in the quarterfinals 6-2, Keslering fell in the semifinals to nationally ranked Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin.  Theilke, who is a 2x cadet freestyle all-american, used a late reversal to take the lead and hold off Keselring 4-3.  Keselring wrestled back to finish 3rd while Thielke won the title with a 9-1 win in the finals.  Keselering was his only match that was not won by fall or major decision as Thielke was voted the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

Zach Johnson finished 3rd at 140lbs, giving Rockford three placers on the day.  Johnson nabbed the #2 seed and was upset by Jacob Tonte of Indiana in the quarterfinals, but stormed all the way back to finish 3rd.

Corey Alegria or Alma finished 4th at 119lbs.  After making an impressive run to the semifinals Alegria was beat by eventual champ Justin Brooks of Indiana.  Alegria, who missed all of his freshman season last year with an injury, showed that he should be a force to be reckoned with this season on the high school scene.

Also placing was Allegan's Matt Smith, who ended up 7th at 130lbs.  Smith lost his first bout of the day, but rattled off 4 straight wins to advance to the placing rounds.
