Schmitt & Coon finish as Cadet Freestyle Runner-Ups
7/24 - The Cadet Freestyle Nationals wrapped up last night in Fargo and
Team Michigan finished 9th overall behind the efforts of five All-Americans.
Greco-Roman champs Jacob Schmitt and Adam Coon fell short of
winning double titles as they lost their final matches to wreslters they have
previously beaten.
Schmitt lost a three period battle with Austin Hood of Kansas in a rematch
of the Greco-Roman finals. Schmitt is now a 4x Fargo All-American after
placing 4th in both styles last year.
Coon lost his first and only match of the week as he lost to Ty Walz of Ohio
in the 215lb finals. Coon had beaten Walz earlier this year at the FILA
Cadet Nationals.
Also earning double All-American status for Michigan was Josh Pennell
at 125lbs and Travis Curley at 145lbs. Pennell finished 4th at 125lbs and
Curley won his final match over Kyle Perrault of California to finish 5th.
8th grade standout Zac Hall earned his first All-American status at 98lbs,
finishing 7th with a finals win over Jacob Trujillo of Colorado.
