7/19 - Cadet Greco-Roman action concluded today in Fargo
and with two Michiganders, Jacob Schmitt and Adam Coon,
being crowned Greco-Roman National Champions.  They
both won handily as Schmitt won 1-0, 1-0 over Austin Hood
of Kansas at 105lbs and Coon won the 215lb title with a
2nd period fall over Brett Geilenfeldt of Wisconsin.

Schmitt, a returning double all-american from a year ago,
earned his 3rd All-American plaque and first stop sign with
the win.

Coon ended a truly dominant outing as he did not lose a
single period in the two days of action.  His finals pin was
his 5th of the tournament as Coon secured falls over all but
one of his opponents.

St Johns freshman Josh Pennell came out firing in the
125lb finale against former St Johns standout Ben Whitford,
who now lives in suburban Chicago and competes for
Team Illinois.  Whitford, a returning Cadet Greco National

Runner-Up, was one of the most heavily favored wrestlers to win in the
Cadet Greco Division.

Pennell gave Whitford all he could handle, however, as he used a mean trap-arm gut wrench to win the opening period 6-0.  Whitford then bounced back with a 5-0 2nd period win, but Pennell battled back and used two push outs to build a 2-0 3rd period lead. Whitford then exploded with back-to-back three point throws to win the final period and win the title.

Four other Michiganders capped off All-American performances, led by Farmington Hills Harrison sophomore Kevin Beazley who finished 4th at 171lbs.  Travis Curley won his 5th place match over Travis Berridge of Florida to finish 5th at 145lbs while Martin Rodriguez and Payne Hayden each lost their final bout.  Rodriguez finished 6th at 98lbs and Hayden ended up 8th at 140lbs.

The Cadets will now have a day off before returning to the FargoDome mats Wednesday morning for the start of the Freestyle competetion.

Junior Greco started today and will conclude tommorow, check back for more coverage.
