Rodriguez, Hall, Pommerenke finish perfect at America's Cup
6/5 - Three Michigan wrestlers finished 4-0 this weekend
and two of those wrestlers, 2x state champs Freddie
Rodriguez and Devin Pommerenke, were not a big surprise.
The third undefeated wrestler, however, was a different
story.
Mark Hall, a 7th grader from Davison, has been well
recognized for the past few years as one of the top up-and-
coming youth wrestlers in Michigan and the country most
of his wrestling career. This weekend, Hall officially
stamped himself as one of the next big things in wrestling
with an impresive undefeated weekend in which he downed
three state placers, including one of the top high school
lightweights in the country.
Hall, who wrestled 119lbs for the Michigan squad, scored
the biggest win of his young career today when he
knocked off 2x California State Champ Alex Cisneros,
who is ranked as one of the top 5 112lbers in the country by all national polls.
After a scoreless first period, Cisneros went down to start the second period and Hall used a tightwaist half tilt to score two nearfall points and jump out to a lead that he would never surrender. Cisneros would escape before the end of the period to cut the lead to 2-1. Hall then chose neutral for the third period and with under 30 seconds left Hall used a slick boot scoot duck under to get behind Cisneros and before scoring the inevitable takedown Cisneros scurried out of bounds with Hall dragging his toes as they went out of the circle. The referree did not award the takedown, however, he did award a fleeing the mat point to Hall, pushing his lead to 3-1. After fighting off a late Cisneros takedown attempt, time ran out and Hall scored the amazing upset win, leaving the Central Valley California crowd shocked and silenced.
Prior to his win over Cisneros, Hall rallied from an early deficit to
come back and beat New Jersey State runner-up Kyle Casaletto in
Michigan's first round dual. Yesterday, the 7th grader went 2-0
including a pin over Matt Welch, who was 4th in the California State
Tournament this year.
Freddie Rodriguez continued his recent dominance on the national
stage this weekend as he went 4-0, including a technical fall win
today over New Jersey state champ Anthony Ashnault, who is
currently the #3 ranked 103lber in the country according to InterMat.
Rodriguez's only match that was not a fall or techincal fall was his
first of the weekend yesterday, when he scored a major decision over
Zahid Valencia of California.
Devin Pommerenke did what he does best, pinning 3 of his 4
opponents this weekend. Pommerenke's only non-fall was the final
Michigan match of the weekend against Central Valley California
where he won 1-0 over Luis Contreras.
Team Michigan dropped both of their duals today to New Jersey and Central Valley California to finish 2-2 on the weekend.
2x State Champ Alec Mooradian finished the weekend with two one-point losses to the California state champ Bryan Grubbs and runner-up Zach Zimmer, however, the DCC junior scored a dominant 7-2 win over New Jersey state champ Alex Schafer in round 1 today.

Hall was a Kentucky High School state runner-up this year as a 7th grader for Ryle High School. In Kentucky, 7th/8th graders are eligible to compete at the High School level.
Rodriguez won the Division 1 state title at 112lbs, however, he has left little doubt that he is the top 103lber in the land after pinning #1 ranked Cody Phillips of IN at FloNationals and tech-falling #3 Ashnault today.
