4 Michigan Preps win Central Regional Titles
5/23 – The USAW Central Regionals went down in Franklin, IN
this weekend and a strong presence of Michigan’s top Cadets
and Juniors were in attendance.
Four Michigan prep standouts won Freestyle titles in dominant
fashion without losing a period.
Jacob Schmitt (Cadet 112lbs), Conor Youtsey (Junior 119lbs),
Joe Rendina (Junior 130lbs), and Chris Heald (Junior 189lbs),
gained valuable Fargo seeding criteria while winning every
period win which they wrestled yesterday.
Heald, who finished 3rd in the state at 189lbs in Divison 1 this
year, scored a 1-0, 1-0 win over FILA Cadet Double All-
American Ian Korb in the finals.
Division 3 state champion Joe Rendina knocked off a FILA
Cadet All-American in this finals as well as he down Joey
Gosinski of Illinois 6-0, 5-1. This marks the 2nd Regional title
for Rendina, who won the Northeast Regional in Brockport
earlier this month as well.
Schmitt was un-challenged all day, winning all of his 5
matches via tech-fall or fall. 2x state champ Youtsey won an
all-Michigan final, edging 2x Division 1 All-Stater Alex Calandrino 2-0, 1-0 to win the 119lb title.
