Trice and Rodriguez double up in Akron

4/11 -The FILA Cadet and University National Championships
concluded today in Akron, Ohio as a pair of Michiganders on
both ends of the age and weight spectrum won Freestyle
National Championships.

Holt sophomore Freddie Rodriguez and Central Michigan
redshirt sophomore Jarod Trice both "doubled up", winning a
Freestyle title just days after winning in Greco as well.

The double title for Rodriguez gives him a total of three FILA
Cadet National titles to his name as he won in freestyle a year
ago.  Rodriguez tore through solid competetion en route to
winning a weight that included at least four wrestlers currently
ranked nationally by InterMat.

His biggest win was a three period win over Iowa state champ
Cory Clark, who is currently ranked #12 nationally at 112lbs.
Rodriguez then scored a two period tech-fall over Sam Brancale of Minnesota who is ranked 11th at 103lbs.  In the finals, Rodriguez downed 8th grade phenom Jered Cortez of Illinois in another three period battle.  Cortez, who was a Cadet Freestyle National Runner-Up last year in Fargo, is currently ranked as the top Junior High wrestler in the country by InterMat.

Trice, who was an NCAA All-American for CMU this year, won 6 matches at 264lbs to double up with his Freestlye National Title.  Trice was dominant as he lost only two periods throughout the two-day tournament.  With his wins, Trice has now qualified for a spot in the 2010 World Team Trials in both styles.

Besides Rodriguez, two other Michigan state champs placed in their weight class to earn All-American honors.

St Johns freshman Jacob Schmitt went 4-0 in his pool to advance to the 46kg finals, including a big win over #2 nationally ranked Brad Perkins of Missouri, who was a Cadet Freestyle National Champ in Fargo last summer.  Schmitt lost a three period match in the finals Nathan Tomasello of Ohio, who was a FILA Cadet Runner-Up last year.

2x state champ Alec Mooradian of DCC earned his 2nd straight FILA Cadet All-American Honor after placing last year.  Mooradian, who also placed in Fargo last summer, continued his freestyle success finishing 5th at 58kg.  Mooradian lost twice in his pool to a pair of nationally ranked foes, #8 Ben Whitford (IL) and #13 Brandon Jeske (VA).  Before his two losses to Whitford and Jeske, Mooradian won six straight matches without surrendering a period.  He also scored a big win over returning Fargo All-American Ben Morgan of Minnesota.

In the University Division, Central Michigan and Michigan State both featured All-Americans.  In addition to Trice, Eric Cubberly earned All-American honors, finishing 5th at 163lbs.  Dan Osterman of MSU earned double All-American honors as the St Johns grad came back from a 2nd round loss to finish 3rd at 138lbs.  In his final match Osterman defeated another Michigan state champ in Andrew Schutt of Yale, who wrestles for Buffalo University now.
