Hall one of 6 Cadet Freestyle All-Americans

July 21st, 2011

7/21 – The Cadet Freestyle Championships came to a close on Friday with Team Michigan in eleventh place.  The Cadets had six wrestlers earn All-American honors for a total of 23 team points.  States finishing ahead of Michigan included Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio and Iowa.

The top performer for the cadets was St. Johns sophomore Zac Hall.  Hall, who was a D2 state champion last year, matched his Greco Roman finish by placing third in the 105lbs weight class.  The only loss of the tournament for Hall came against the eventual champion Tommy Thorn, a Minnesota state champion.  Hall capped his tournament with a solid two period decision over Illinois runner-up Jordan Northrup in his third place match.

Coming off of a strong showing in Greco Roman, Hudson
sophomore Cole Weaver carried his success over to the
freestyle tournament where he finished in fourth place at
119lbs.  Weaver, a D4 state runner-up last year, posted
a 7-2 record that included an impressive, hard fought
victory over Minnesota runner-up Cole Sladek.

Michigan picked up another All-Amercan at 215lbs
where Fowlerville junior Brian Moran earned a fourth
place finish.  Moran continued his impressive offseason
by compiling a 4-2 record with his only losses coming
against two-time Missouri state champion J’Den Cox and
South Dakota runner-up Nathan Rotert.

At 152lbs, DCC sophomore Drew Garcia joined Hall, Weaver, Moran and Logan Marcicki as double All-Americans with a fifth place showing in one of the tournament’s most star-studded weight classes.  Garcia put together a 5-2 record in his pool, suffering losses to a pair of highly touted grapplers.  Garcia dropped matches to Oklahoma state champion Kelian Torres who is ranked #37 in the class of 2013, and Maryland state champion Josh Llopez who is ranked #23 in the class of 2014.  Garcia bounced back in his fifth place match with a technical fall over Nevada’s Ryder Newman.

Davison freshman Lincoln Olson turned in a solid debut in the Fargo Dome by achieving All-American status in the 91lbs weight class.  Olson posted a 4-2 record to finish seventh place, defeating Colorado’s Derek Huff 6-4, 6-0 in his final match.

The final All-American for Michigan came at 140lbs, where Logan Marcicki finished in eighth place.  Marcicki, a state champion for Detroit Catholic Central, suffered an injury while wrestling Nebraska’s Kenny Martin which forced him to default the rest of his matches and resulted in his eighth place finish.
