Division 1’s top two ranked teams met on Wednesday night when #1 Detroit
Catholic Central battled #2 Oxford in a rematch from last year’s MHSAA State
Semi-Finals and a possible preview of this year’s State Finals.

Top ranked Detroit Catholic Central set the tone early with a big win at 160
pounds.  Senior Captain Andy Erickson scored four third period takedowns
against Oxford’s Liam Logan to force overtime.  Erickson scored a quick
takedown in overtime to win by a score of 14-12 and give DCC a 3-0 lead in
the dual.

“Andy Erickson’s win at 160 was huge for us,” said DCC Head Coach Mitch
Hancock. “Andy showed a lot of guts in the third period to force overtime and
get the win”.

At 189 pounds DCC’s other Senior Captain, Miles Trealout, scored another big
early win that helped the Shamrocks build an early lead.  Trailing 2-0 in the first
period, Trealout reversed Oxford’s Matt Anger to his back and scored a fall to
give DCC a 9-3 lead.

However Oxford responded to Trealout’s pin with two big wins of their own.  The Wildcats reclaimed the lead by a score of 10-9 thanks to a major decision by Prescott Line at 215 pounds and a decision by Nick McMaster at 285 pounds.

After falling behind, DCC was ignited by some big wins in the lower weights that helped them establish control in the dual.  The Shamrocks won extremely close matches at 103, 112 and 119 to retake the lead 18-10.

Evan Toth, Malik Amine and TJ Fagan were the DCC wrestlers responsible for the key wins in the lower weights.  Hancock attributed the close wins to hard work in the room.

"We were able to come out ahead in those matches because of guts and hard work," said Hancock.  "Training hard in the room is key to our wrestlers being able to win close matches."

The Shamrocks continued to roll as they picked up three more consecutive wins to take full control of the dual.  Ken Bade earned a decision at 125 pounds for DCC followed by huge falls at 130 and 135 by Logan Marcicki and Alec Mooradian that gave the Shamrocks a commanding 33-10 lead.

Mike Thomas and Matt Frisch closed the gap for Oxford with wins at 140 and 145, but it was too little too late for the Wildcats.  In the final match of the dual DCC Freshman Drew Garcia won a nail biter over Oxford's Dakota Peasley in a rematch of last Saturday’s DCC Finals to cap off the Shamrocks 36-17 win.

The Shamrocks will be in action this weekend when they host several of the state's premier teams at the DCC Super Duals.  Among the squads in attendance will be returning Division 2 State Champion St. Johns who is currently ranked 13th in the nation by Intermat as well as Division 3's top-ranked Dundee.

The Wildcats have the weekend off and will return to action next on Wednesday when they take on Lake Orion and West Bloomfield.
