Coon doubles up at FILA Cadet Nationals
4/23 - The freestyle portion of the FILA Cadet Nationals wrapped up today in
Akron, OH with Adam Coon making it two titles in one weekend. After
winning the 220lb Greco title Thursday, Coon capped the unbeaten
weekend off with a Freestyle title as well.
Coon, a sophomore 2x state champ at 215lbs, dominated his pool going
5-0 with 4 falls to land a spot in the 220lb freestyle finals. In the finals, he
scored a 1-1, 2-0 win over Ty Walz of Ohio in a rematch of last year's Fargo
Cadet National Freestyle Finals where Walz beat Coon.
Three other Michiganders won their pools to advance to the finals before
losing final bouts.
Returning Cadet Freestyle Runner-Up Jacob Schmitt of St Johns won his
pool at 119lbs but lost to 4th ranked Thomas Gilman of Nebraska in the
finals.
Fellow St. Johns sophomore Josh Pennell won his first 5 matches soundly
at 138lbs before receiving back-to-back injury defaults to advance to the
finals. In a battle of retruning Cadet Double All-Americans Pennell fell to
Nevada's Joey Lavallee, who was 3rd in both styles at Fargo last year.
Lincoln Olson also fell in the finals and wound up a match short of
repeating after winning it in Greco two days earlier. The Davison 8th
grader fell to returning Cadet Double all-american Gannon Volk of
Minnesota in the finals 92lb finals.
The champion at each weight class earned a spot on the US World Team to compete at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Hungary. Coon will now represent the US in both styles.
Three other Michiganders earned All-American status as Kevin Beazley and Payne Hayden finished the same in freestyle as they did in Greco, placing 5th at 6th at 167.5lbs. Beazley, a DCC junior, knocked off Hayden, a St. Johns sophomore, in the 5th place match after beating him in the Greco 5th place match two days ago.
Returning Cadet Double All-American Travis Curley finished 5th at 152lbs after taking 3rd in his pool with a 6-2 record.
