Michigan finishes 4th at Junior Freestyle Duals
6/28 - The Michigan National team may have been without
the state's two most prominent returning juniors, 2x Cadet
Double Champ Taylor Massa and reigning Junior Double
Champ Freddie Rodriguez, at the Junior National Duals this
weekend, however, the Michigan squad still managed to
finish 4th in the star-studded Freestyle field and was just a
few points from competing in the championship dual.
After finishing 2nd in their pool to Iowa, Michigan won their
first 2 matches in the Championship bracket before falling to
Oklahoma 31-28, falling just short of the Championship
Finals. Michigan fell to Iowa again in the finals to finish 3rd.
Jacob Schmitt of St Johns, a returning Double Cadet
Finalist from Fargo last year where he finished 1st in Greco
and 2nd in Freestyle, paced the Michiganders with a
perfect 9-0 record that included a pair of wins over former
Freestyle All-Americans including a three period win over
Eric Devos of Iowa who finished the season ranked #15 at
119lbs by InterMat.
Fellow St Johns Redwings Josh Pennell and Jordan
Wohlfert, along with 2x State Champ Adam Coon of Fowlerville and DCC senior-to-be Kevin Beazley, finished with just one loss in freestyle action.
Wohlfert, a 2010 Cadet Freestyle National Champ, showed that he is primed for another Fargo run this year, scoring a big wins over Zach Skates of Oklahoma, who finished this year ranked #15 in the country at 160lbs and will be wrestling at Oklahoma State next fall. Wohlfert also knocked off Burke Paddock of New York who has all-americaned at virtually every level in both freestyle and greco-roman. Wohlfert's only loss was to nationally ranked Austin Wilson of Nebraska.
Pennell, who was a double Cadet All-American last year, went 8-1 at 130lbs with his lone loss coming to multiple time Fargo champ Mark Grey of New Jersey, who is ranked #3 nationally at 125lbs.
Coon's one loss in freestyle was his only loss of the weekend after finishing undefeated in Greco. His lone loss was a 1st period fall to JT Goodwin of California. Other than the loss to Goodwin, Coon did not lose a period in freestyle action.
3x State Champ Alec Mooradian went 6-2 at 140lbs, but was highly competetive against a strong field of nationally ranked wrestlers. Mooradian's two losses were to Top 15 ranked wrestlers in Steven Rodriguez of New York and Chase Ferman of Oklahoma, however, he scored a big win over CJ Cobb of New Jersey, ranked #11 at 145lbs. The win over Cobb avenged a loss earlier this spring when Cobb defeated Mooradian in three periods at the Fila Jr Freestyle Nationals. This time around it was Mooradian out-lasting Cobb in three periods for the big win.
Isaac Jewell (105) and Logan Rimmer (285) were the other Michigan wrestlers to score at least 6 wins in freestyle. Read below for all the individual records as well as box scores from all the Michigan #1 Dual Meets.
