Prep Report - Week 3 Recap

MI Grappler HS Analyst Steve Widzinski breaks down how the top teams in each division fared over the past week. (December 13th-19th)

Division 1
#1 Detroit Catholic Central: The Shamrocks continued to their early season dominance by claiming first place at the Oakland County Championships on Saturday.  Detroit Catholic Central edged third ranked Oxford by a narrow margin to claim their second consecutive county title.

#2 Davison: Davison took home a Genesee County title thanks to a strong team performance this weekend.  The Cardinals narrowly beat out D3 #3 Lake Fenton and D3 #5 Birch Run to claim first place in a very tough field.

#3 Oxford: Oxford turned in a very solid second place performance at the Oakland County championships this weekend.  The Wildcats finished just a few points behind first place Detroit Catholic Central and finished over 100 points ahead of third place Holly.

#4 Hartland: On Saturday Hartland traveled to the very tough Holland Duals where they went up against some of the state’s top competition.  The Eagles downed Sparta 39-31 to win their pool and reach the semi-finals where they won a hard fought dual against fifth ranked Temperance Bedford by a score of 36-33.  In the finals Hartland fell 55-12 to the state’s top ranked team St. Johns. 

#5 Temperance Bedford: On Wednesday the Mules started their week with a strong 45-23 dual meet victory over ninth ranked Monroe.  On Saturday Bedford traveled to Holland where they finished the day in third place.   Bedford won their pool with an impressive 42-21 win over D2 #2 Allegan.  The Mules fell to Hartland 36-33 in the semi-finals but bounced back to defeat sixth ranked Rockford 45-18 in their final match of the day.

#6 Rockford: The Rams claimed fourth place at the very tough Holland Duals on Saturday.  Rockford won their pool to earn them a semi-final match against D2 #1 St. Johns.  The Rams fell to St. Johns by a score of 57-12 and then lost against 45-18 against sixth ranked Temperance Bedford to finish the day in fourth.

#7 Holt: This weekend the Rams traveled to Ohio for the very competitive North Canton Holiday Tournament.  Holt took fifth place in a very strong 39-team field.

#8 Brighton: The Bulldogs continued their very strong start to the season by claiming first place at the Monroe Team Tournament this weekend.  Brighton compiled a 5-0 record on the day highlighted by a 51-12 victory of ninth ranked Monroe.

#9 Monroe: Monroe finished in third place at their home team tournament on Saturday.  The Trojans finished the day with a 3-2 record that included a 51-12 loss to eighth ranked Brighton




Division 2

#1 St. Johns: The returning state champions dominated their way through the extremely tough Holland Duals on Saturday.  The Redwings defeated returning Division 4 State Champions Hudson to win their pool.  In the semi-finals St. Johns cruised past Rockford with a 57-12 win and then defeated Hartland 54-12 in the finals to claim the tournament championship.

#2 Allegan: On Wednesday the Tigers posted a solid 38-29 win over D3 #6 Otsego.  Allegan traveled to Holland on Saturday where they finished the day in seventh place in a very tough field.  The Tigers finished the day with a 3-2 record losing duals to D1 #6 Temperance Bedford and Hudsonville.

#6 Greenville: On Saturday the Yellow Jackets dominated their way through the Swan Valley Duals Tournament for a first place finish.  It was an impressive outing for Greenville who defeated second place Capac by a score of 64-12.

#7 Holly: The Bronchos competed at the very tough Oakland County Tournament this weekend where they came away with a third place finish.  The only teams to finish ahead of Holly were D1 #1 Detroit Catholic Central and D1 #3 Oxford.

#8 Mason: The Bulldogs attended the very tough Marquette Challenge this weekend and results are currently unavailable.  We will try to get results posted ASAP under the tournament results page.

#9 Linden: The Eagles were in action at the Genesee County championships on Saturday where they came away with a ninth place finish.  Teams placing ahead of Linden included D1 #2 Davison, D3 #3 Lake Fenton and D3 #5 Birch Run.

#10 Sparta: The Holland Team Tournament on Saturday provided the tenth ranked Spartans with some very tough competition.  Sparta wrestled close dual meets with some of the state’s best teams, including a 39-31 loss to D1's #4 Hartland, but ultimately fell short of the top eight.



Division 3

#1 Dundee: The Vikings cruised to a first place finish at the Woodhaven Team Tournament on Saturday.  Dundee handled their competition with relative ease, defeating Canton 51-20 in the first place match.

#2 Richmond: Despite missing several key wrestlers from their lineup, Richmond was still able to dominate the Macomb County Tournament this weekend.  The Blue Devils turned in an impressive performance, scoring over 90 more points than second place Macomb Dakota.

#3 Lake Fenton: The Blue Devils went up against some very tough competiion this weekend at the Genesee County championships.  Lake Fenton finished the day in second place, behind only D1 #2 Davison and ahead of D3 #5 Birch Run.

#4 Chippewa Hills: On Saturday the Warriors turned in a strong performance to claim first place honors at their own individual tournament.  It was a good day for Chippewa Valley who scored over 50 more points than second place Bullock Creek.  Other teams finishing below the Warriors included D3 #9 Shelby, Allendale and Onsted.

#5 Birch Run: Birch Run continued their strong start to the season with a third place finish at the Genesee County championships on Saturday.  The Panthers were right in the hunt for a county title, finishing within 25 points of first place Davison and second place Lake Fenton.

#6 Otsego: On Wednesday Otsego battled with conference rival D2 #2 Allegan, falling by a score of 38-29.  The Bulldogs reached the finals of the Grand Rapids Northview Team Tournament on Saturday where they fell  43-19 to D3 #8 Whitehall.

#8 Whitehall: It was a successful weekend for Whitehall who claimed first place at the Grand Rapids Northview team tournament.  The Vikings cruised to the finals where they topped sixth ranked Otsego by a score of 43-19.

#9 Shelby: Shelby competed at the Chippewa Hills Tournament on Saturday where they finished the day tied with Allendale for third place.  Teams finishing ahead of Shelby were D3 #4 Chippewa Hills and  D3 #10 Bullock Creek.

#10 Bullock Creek: The Lancers turned in a solid performance at the Chippewa Hills Tournament on Saturday, finshing in second place behind only fourth ranked Chippewa Hills.  Teams finishing below Bullock Creek included D3 #9 Shelby, Allendale and Onsted.

Division 4

#1 Hudson: Division 4’s top ranked team traveled to the extremely tough Holland Duals on Saturday where they finished the day in fifth place.  The Tigers had a 4-1 record on the day with their only loss coming to the state’s top ranked team St. Johns.

#3 New Lothrop: New Lothrop competed at the very tough Marquette Challenge on Saturday, however, results are currently unavilable. We will try to get results soon and post them under the tournament results page.

#4 Springport: The Spartans traveled to the Michigan Center Duals tournament on Satuday where they took home a runner up finish.  Springport dominated their to the finals where they fell 46-23 to fifth ranked Manchester.

#5 Manchester: It was a good weekend for the Dutchmen who had an impressive showing at the Michigan Center Duals on Saturday.  Manchester defeated fourth ranked Springport 46-23 in the finals to claim first place.

#7 Rogers City: Rogers City competed at the very tough Marquette Challenge on Saturday, however, results are currently unavilable. We will try to get results soon and post them under the tournament results page.
