3 Runners Up Lead Michigan Women to 3rd Place Finish

Fargo Coverage Section

7/19 - Michigan’s Junior Women’s Freestyle Team proved themselves to be among the nation’s best this week, performing well at the USA Wrestling National Championships in Fargo.  The team finished third nationally, despite having only 11 competitors.  The only squads to finish ahead of the Michigan women were California and Texas who both had considerably larger rosters.

Leading the way for Michigan were three finalists, all of whom finished second within their weight class.  Division 2 state qualifier and DeWitt graduate Rachel McFarland added to her already impressive résumé with a second place finish at 130lbs.  McFarland is committed to continue her career at women’s wrestling powerhouse Oklahoma City University this fall.

Joining McFarland as second place finishers were Steffanie Hampton and and Kaitlin Hill.  Hampton earned runner-up honors in the 121lbs weight class, while Hill fell just short of a title at 172lbs.  Others who achieved All-American status for Michigan were Patrica Martin at 105lbs, Autumn Rux at 148lbs, Samantha Cushard at 159lbs and Brenna Ramirez at 198lbs.
