10/2 - The EMU Eagle Smackdown attracted a flock of prep stars to Ypsilanti last weekend. Among those turning in impressive performances were Roger Wildmo of Durand and Darius Wass of Swan Valley.
Wildmo, a freshman this year at Durand HS, officially arrived on the high school scene with his performance. He entered the tournament as the only freshman ranked in the MI Grappler Preaseason Top 5, and he lived up to the hype. Wildmo won his first match 4-0 over senior Jon Lichorobiec of Novi, who placed 5th in the state last year at 103lbs in Division 1. Wildmo's second match didn't get any easier as he ran into last year's D2 103lb state runner up in Herm Gillium of Clio. After defeating Gillium 3-1 Wildmo then came out on top of BJ Miller of Defiance, OH to set up a final match with returning 112lb D2 state qualifier Justin Walls of Riverview. Wildmo shut Walls out with a 3-0 win to finish his impressive day.
Wass, a sophomore at Swan Valley who entered this tournament already established as one of the top young lightweights in the state, solidified himself as a force to be reckoned with as he knocked off three state placers on the day: Andrew Brackins of Waterford Kettering, Kevin Vanderpool of Hudson, and Bryan Rickard of Davison. Wass is currently ranked 3rd in the Preseason Top 5 at 112lbs and Rickard is ranked #1 at 119.
The largest weight class was 152lbs, which was won by Corey Woodruff of Pinconning. Woodruff, a senior, placed 6th in the state last year at 145lbs in Division 3. Woodruff beat two Division 1 All-Staters in his semifinal and final matches in the likes of Roseville's Robert Nash and Bedford's Billy Osborne.
Other returning state placers bringing home titles were Kevin Schaefer of Byron at 125, Nick Bara of Romeo at 140, Andy Anderson of Traverse City SF at 171, and Nick Whitenburg of Bedford at 215. Complete results listed below:
