The wrestling Wolverines took a 9-6 lead into the intermission enroute to a 26-9 win over
in-state rival Michigan State on Sunday at Cliff Keen Auditorium in Ann Arbor.
"It's always nice to win against MSU," said coach Joe McFarland. "We rode well all night and got some key victories which made all the difference."
Leading the charge for Michigan was #5 senior Justin Zeerip who got the Wolverines on the board with a 7-1 decision at 174, then heavyweight #11 junior Ben Apland added to the count with a 6-0 decision over #18 Mike McClure. Senior #18 Zac Stevens also lent a hand with a 17-7 major over Terry Turner at 133, and sophomore #7 Eric Grajales contributed the night's only fall at 1:50 over MSU's Dan Osterman.
From the MSU side of the mat, #12 senior Anthony Jones Jr. won a controversial double-overtime match over Brandon Zeerip at 157, while redshirt freshman Nick McDiarmid defeated freshman Chris Heald 8-3 at 197 and senior Ian Hinton defeated junior Hunter Collins 9-5 at 184.
Michigan is now 4-2 in the Big Ten and 6-3 overall. On February 3rd the Wolverines travel to Ohio State for another critical conference showdown with the Buckeyes.
