Bennett wins Prep Wrestler of the Year

4/8 - The votes have been tallied and the result is clear: Ben Bennett is the 2008
prep wrestler of the year.  The Rockford senior dominated the voting much like he
dominated his way through the Division 1 state tournament and the NHSCA Sr
National Tournament.

Bennett's storied career at Rockford came to an end last month as he wrapped up an
undefeated season with his 3rd Division 1 state title.  Then, last weekend Bennett won
the prestigious Senior National Championships at 171lbs as was named the
tournament's Outstanding Wrestler after knocking off top ranked Hunter Collins of
California in the finals 7-2.

Bennett finished his career with only three total losses and two in the state of
Michigan.  He lost once each year as a freshman, sophomore, and junior.  His only loss during his sophomore campaign came in the state semifinals and kept him from becoming a 4x state champ and his only loss as a junior came from top ranked Sean Nemec of St. Edwards, Ohio.

Bennett will being stay close to home as his wrestling career will continue next fall in Mt Pleasant for coach Tom Borelli at Central Michigan University.  Bennett edged out finalists Mark Weber of Goodrich and Marcel Dubose for this year's wrestler of the year award.  Last year's High School wrestler of the year was 4x state champ Justin Zeerip of Hesperia, who now wrestles for the University of Michigan.
