Shorthanded Cadet squad bows out of Greco Duals

6/28 - The Cadet Greco Roman National Duals wrapped up yesterday in Kansas and the
Michigan squad failed to place in the top 8. Team Michigan was hampered by forfeits as
they were forced to void 4 weights each dual which proved too much for them to hang in
many of their duals.
Despite being shorthanded the Michigan squad still managed to win two duals in their pool,
however, they were eliminated in the opening round of the consolation bracket by Minnesota2.
There were a few promising individual performances, most notably 8th grade phenom Taylor
Massa who made his National Cadet debut with a solid 5-1 performance at 140lbs. Massa's
lone loss came to Missouri sophomore Kaleb Friedley in a high scoring three period thriller.
Friedley, who was a Cadet Greco All-American in Fargo last year, beat Massa 10-3 in the
opening period. The St Johns middle schooler answered back with a 7-1 second period win
to send the match to third period, where Friedley would close the door with a 10-2 3rd period,
handing Massa his only loss.
A handful of others put together solid 4 win performances, including another St Johns 8th
grader, Jordan Wohlfert at 130lbs as well as a couple of state placers in Ben Matthieson
at 105lbs and Conor Youtsey at 112lbs. Tyler Humes and Nick Bohn also contributed 4 wins a piece.
The cadets will be getting back into action today with Freestyle competetion. Check back with Michigan Grappler for results.
