Taylor Massa's quest for a Cadet double title got a little
bumpy today as he went through a three period war with
Oregon's Seth Thomas in his last match of the day.
Massa surrendered the first period, which was the first
he has lost thus far in the freestyle tournament, but then
battled back to win two straight periods that both came
down the closing seconds. A last second match
winning takedown kept Massa's 140lb title hopes alive
as he will take a 7-0 record into the third and final day of
Cadet Freestyle competotion tommorow. Massa will
wrestle Jeremy Davenport of Iowa tommorow morning
and a win will propel him to the championship match.
Two other Cadets, Freddie Rodriguez and Jordan T
homas, are also undefeated through two days of
competition and are closing in on a finals berth.
Rodriguez had lost his first and only period of the
tournament to this point today to Cody Wheeler in
the first period, but came back to win two straight and
take the match. He will now wrestle undefeated Cory Clark of Iowa and the winner will wrestle for the 91lb national title.
Thomas won a thrilling three period rumble this evening with Ohio's Pierce Harger after losing the first period. Thomas battled back to win the match and then followed that up with a dominant win over Chase Martino of Tennesee. Thomas will now need two wins tommorow morning to make the 145lb finals.
The 4th Cadet to advance to Day 3 and lock up an all-american spot was Nick Bohn of East Kentwood who lost his last match, but finished 4th in his pool and will wrestle for 7th place at 135lbs.
Junior Freestyle
In the midst of the Cadet action the Juniors were battling to stay alive in
freestyle competition. 10 Juniors advanced to the second day of competetion, 5
of which did so with an undefeated record. Brenan Lyon (98), Kyle Waldo (112),
Mike Leholm (130), Seth Schaner (135), and Ben Bennett (171) will all start out
tommorow morning without a loss. Waldo, Schaner, and Bennett are yet to lose
a period.
Also advancing with one loss was Jared Germaine (119), Zach Davis (130), Jake
Walters (135), Josh Houldsworth (140), and Jake Bohn (152).
