Massa & McDiarmid provide Fargo fireworks
3 Cadets secure All-American, 4 Juniors go undefeated through Day 1

7/20 - It was an eventful evening in the FargoDome as
Taylor Massa and Nick McDiarmid survived a couple
battles to keep their perfect records and Greco National
Title hopes intact.
Massa, who cruised through the first day of action
without losing a period, survived two tough matches
today. In his first match against Wyoming's Andy
Mcculley Massa gave up a big first period throw that
was nearly scored 5 and would have lost him the
period. However, two of the three officials scored it
only 3, so Massa's 5 point lead held up. He then won
a wild 6-4 period in the second to get past McCulley.
In his last match Massa squared off with Super 32
Champ Josh Dziewa of Pennsylvania. Dziewa, who is
the 6th ranked sophomore in the country at his weight,
came out firing and threw Massa to take an early lead. After scoring a gut wrench, Dziewa put Massa away with a 9-3 tech in the first. In the second period Massa answered back with a takedown and a tough gut wrench to take a 3-0 lead after the first minute that would hold up for a 4-1 period win. Then the 8th grade phenom showed what the hype is about in the third period. After a scoreless minute on their feet Massa won the coin flip and got to lock first. From the reverse lift lock Massa quickly snatched Dziewa into the air and launched him over his head for a 5 point throw that ended the period and sealed the win.
"I knew I was going to throw that kid," said Massa, "As soon as I had him in the air I knew it was over."
Massa is now 7-0 and is one match away from the Cadet Greco-Roman finals. Tommorow morning he will wrestle Seth Thomas of Oregon, who finished 4th at the FILA Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals this past spring. Thomas has one loss, which came yesterday to Colby Kloetzer of Idaho, who beat Massa at the Cadet Duals as is now eliminated from the tournament.
McDiarmid wrestled two tough ones today as well that each ended in thrilling
fashion. His first match was against Zeal McGrew of New York, who won the
NHSCA Sophomore Nationals in March. The first two periods were mirror
images as neither wrestler scored in the first minute, then won a coin flip and
stopped each other's lift attempts. Then in the third period things started the
same with no action on their feet. After losing the flip McDiarmid went down
and stopped McGrew's initial lift. He then reversed McGrew and came around
behind. McGrew stood to his feet and McDiarmid lifted the big man into the air
for a belly to back suplex that resulted in a touch fall and a win.
McDiarmid's final match came against returning greco all-american Hayden
Bock of Missouri. McDiarmid lifted Bock for a 3-point throw in the first and then
in the second period he scored a last minute high-gut wrench to win the match.
McDiarmid will now have two matches tommorow morning. If he wins them
both he will be in the Cadet Greco Finals, but no matter what he is guaranteed
to finish no lower than 6th.
Freddie Rodriguez lost a nail biter at 91lbs today, which was his 2nd loss,
however, he will still be an all-american as he will be wrestling for 7th place tommorow night.
The Cadet Greco-Roman will wrestle up to the finals tommorow morning and then conclude with the Finals at 5:00pm.
Michigan's first day of Junior Greco-Roman was very solid as 10 Michiganders
surivived to the second day. Returning Cadet Greco Runner-Up Mike Curby looked
good, going 4-0 without surrendering a period. Returning Junior Greco All-American
Jake Bohn went 4-0 as well at 152lbs. Also going undefeated was Jake Walters at
125lbs and Andrew Schutt at 130lbs.
4x Fargo All-American Brenan Lyon went 1-1 and is now in a round robin at 98lbs,
which guarantees him a place in the top 6 and his 5th all-american honor. Also
advancing to day 2 with one loss was Kirk Britton, Seth Schaner, Drew Weil, Bryant
Craft, and Seth Holt.
The Juniors will continue with the one session tommorow from 9:00am to 1:00pm.
The 10 that advanced also have their 2nd and final weigh in tommorow morning at
7:00am. Check back tommorow for updates throughout the morning session on
