6 Michiganders survive first day of Cadet Freestyle

It is often said that wrestling in Fargo can be a humbling
expierence and today proved that theory true as many of
Michigan's top freshman and sophomore were eliminated in the
first day of Cadet Freestyle action.
Six Michigan grapplers did survive the first day of action, led by a
trio of cadets who aren't even in high school yet. Freddie
Rodriguez of Holt, Taylor Massa of St Johns, and Jordan Thomas
of Greenville all finished the day with unscathed records.
Rodriguez, who finished 7th in Greco a few days ago, started the
tournament off on a tear with two pins and a tech fall. He then lost
the opening period of his 4th round bout with Cody Wheeler of
Pennsylvania, which was also the first stanza he surrendered all
day. Following that Rodriguez stormed back to win the final two
periods and nearly pinned Wheeler a couple times. He now enters
tommorow with an undefeated record as one of 5 athletes
remaining in his 91lb pool.
Massa carried his momentum from winning the Greco National Title a few days ago as he racked up 3 tech falls and 2 falls at 140lbs. At 145lbs Thomas showed similiar dominance with a couple falls and a tech as he will also enter tommorow undefeated. Thomas will wreslte another undefeated wrestler in the morning in the form of Pierce Harger of Ohio who finished third in Greco.
Three other wrestlers advanced to Day 2 with one loss. Matt Dietz of
Clarkston and Nick Bohn of East Kentwood both started the day hot
with 4 straight wins, but dropped their last match of the day to enter
tommorow 4-1 at 130 and 135lbs, respectively. Bohn's loss came to
Josh Dzwieca of PA who lost a three period barn burner to Taylor
Massa in greco a few days ago and was a Super 32 champ last fall.
Jordan Wohlfert's day did not start off the way he wanted as he drew
Greco-Roman National Champ and top ranked sophomore Jayson
Ness of Minnesota. After losing to Ness, Wohlfert battled back to
win 4 in a row, including two three period matches. In Wohlfert's third
match of the day against Ethan Davis of Missouri he scored in the final
twenty seconds of the 2nd and 3rd periods to win.
All of the six remaining wrestlers will now have to weigh in tommorow at 1:30pm and will then continue action tommorow afternoon at 3:30pm.
