12/16 - The final round of the Genesee County tournament was packed with past
state placers and some Michigan's best prep wrestlers.
Bryan Rickard of Davison won his 4th Genesee championship by winning the
deepest weight of the tournament. Rickard knocked off state qualifiers Terrance
Frank of Grand Blanc and Taylor Hawkind of Durand in the quarterfinals and
semifinals to advance to the finals for a showdown with returning D4 stte champ
Allen Krupp of New Lothrop. Rickard used a first period takedown and a mean
ride on top to score the win over Krupp and claim his 4th Genesee crown.
Another Davison grappler, Zach Davis, followed up Rickard's win with a finals victory of his own. Davis used a relentless attack on his feet to take out Montrose's Cody Wray in the finals. Davis also scored a big win over all-stater Eric Telford of Durand in the finals. Also winning for Davison was Justin McDermitt at 145lbs. McDermitt, wrestling up from his normal 140lb division, won a tight bout against Carman Ainsworth's Ronnie Latimer in the finals to garner Davison's 3rd individual title.
Goodrich led the way with 5 individual champions. Grant Overcashier, Mark Weber, and Joe Hopkins made it a clean sweep for the Martians at 130, 135, and 140 lbs. Overcashier dominated throughout the day and finished it up in similiar fashion with a major decision over Linden's Dylan Mooney.
3-time state champ Mark Weber was equally dominant as he scored a techinal fall over Kearsley's Troy Lamson in the 135lb final. Lamson picked up a big semifinal win over Davison's all-stater Zach Labelle to make the finals with Weber.
Joe Hopkins did not enter the day as favored as Weber or Overcashier, however, his results were the same as he won the 140lb title with a 7-4 win over Tony Goss of Bendle.
Also winning for Goodrich was Kyle March and Kyler Elsworth at 171 and 189. Elsworth won one of the biggest matches of the day as he and Richard Kirksey of Davison needed 3 overtime sessions to determine a winner. Elsworth, ranked #1 in division 3, picked up a fall over division 1's top ranked Kirksey in the overtime period. March, meanwhile, knocked off Brandon Boone of Montrose in the finals to earn his title at 171lbs.
Two highly touted freshman put together impressive performances to win at 103
and 112. Lake Fenton freshman Zach Corcoran held off a third period rally from
Goodrich's C.C. Weber to win the 103lb title. Corcoran and Weber are both ranked
in the top 10 in Division 3 and could very well see each other again in March.
Freshman Roger Wildmo of Durand remained undefeated on the year as he pinned
through the 112lb bracket. Wildmo used his devastating cradle to score the fall
over Davison's Cody Robbins in the finals.
Also winning for Durand was state champ Brian Hittle at 152lbs. Hittle, ranked #1
at 145 in the Power Rankings, won 9-5 over Goodrich's Nick Gatchell in the finals
to wrap up his dominant day.
Travis Pettengill, a state champ at 215 last year, continued his sucess at heavyweight with a 8-4 win over state placer and D3's top ranked Earl Leach of Birch Run. The win was one of, if not the biggest that Pettengill has notched since making the move to 285 this year.
Also winning titles were Lapeer East's Phil Jospeh at 160 and Swartz Creek's Brice Carter at 215. Joseph cruised through the 160lb bracket and finished it up with a tech fall over Kyle Tren of New Lothrop in the finals.
Carter won a tight final match over Davison's Jared Cowan in the finals. Cowan, currently ranked 5th in D1, knocked off D3's #3 Donald Whitehead of Otisville Lakeville in the semifinals to make the finals.
