The first Michigan Grappler/MYWA prep wrestler of the week for the 2007-08
season is Jake Varilek of Lake Orion. Varilek, a senior, made his college
plans earlier last week when he commited to wrestle at Div II Belmont Abbey
College in North Carolina. He then followed that big day with another big day
as he won the start studded 152lb weight class at the Dragon Invitational,
held in his home gym at Lake Orion on December 1st. Varilek defeated
all-stater Zach Shaw of Holt in the semifinals and then scored a big upset win
in the finals over reigning state champ Jeremy Bommarito of Hartland.
Varilek, who entered the tournament ranked 3rd in Division 1 at 152lbs,
knocked off #1 ranked Bommarito 6-4. Varilek earned all-state honors last
year as a junior, placing 4th in Division 1 at 152lbs.
