6/25 - Brenan Lyon won his final bout to match his greco finish, placing 3rd in freestyle at 84lbs and end the week with an overall greco & freestyle record of 8-2. Lyon joins a select group of Michigan wrestlers in history who have ever accomplished the feat.
While Lyon entered the tournament as a favorite to contend at his weight class, Calib Rought entered this week as a virtual unknown on the national scene. Rought, who will be a Junior next year at Shelby High School, went 2-2 earlier this week in greco roman but really came on strong for freestyle. He went 5 rounds into the 145lb bracket without losing a match. He then lost a 3-period battle with Mark Stenberg of Illinois before losing again to eventual 3rd place finisher Cody Compton of Missouri. Rought ended his tournament losing a 3-period thriller to Matthew Cunningham of PA.
While no other Michigan cadets earned all-american honors in freestyle, there were a few that came very close. Adam Miller, a Michigan D2 state runner up this year for Sparta High School, won 5 matches and ended just one round away from placing at 152lbs. Miller is currently the 10th ranked sophomore in the country at 152lbs by Intermat.
Kegan Arthur also won 5 matches before being eliminated at 125lbs. One of Arthur's losses came to eventual champ Mac Bailey of Missouri. Arthur, who will be a sophomore next year at Petoskey High School, was a state qualifier as a freshman, ending one round away from placing with a 46-16 record.
Jake Walters & Seth Schaner both lasted deep into the tournament as well, winning 4 matches each at 112 & 125lbs, respecitively. Walters was a Division 2 State Runner last season for St.Johns High School while Schaner was an all-state wrestler as well, finishing 7th for Big Rapids. Both Walters and Schaner will be Juniors in High School next year.
As a state Michigan finished 19th.
