Osterman, Weber, Morse advance at Western Regional
4/25 - The Western Regional has developed into a mini-version of Fargo as
some the country's best high school wrestlers attend year in and year out.
The freestyle division of the regional kicked off yesterday in Las Vegas and
a handful of Michigan grapplers competed, with three advancing to day two
and ensuring themselves a spot in the top 6.
Carson City Crystal junior Dan Osterman finished day 1 a perfect 6-0 at
125lbs to advance to a round robin with Thomas Kelliher of Minnesota and
Ryan Jauch of Illinois. Osterman will wrestle both of them today to decide
what place he will wrestle for. He controls his own destiny, so if he wins
his last two pool matches, Osterman will wrestle for 1st place.
4x state champ and last year's freestyle national runner-up Mark Weber of
Goodrich lost his first bout of the day yesterday to Derek Garcia of
Washington, however, he rattled off 4 wins to earn a spot in the 3rd place
bout. Weber is competing at 145lbs, two weights up from the weight he
wrestled during the 07-08 high school season.
Lowell sophomore Jackson Morse was the final Michigander to advance to the second day of action. Morse won his first 4 bouts, but then lost his final two. He will wrestle for 5th place today at 140lbs.
While the Western Junior Regional will wrap up today, the FILA Junior Freestyle division will be getting underway. There are a slew of top Michigan prep and college grapplers competing in the FILA Juniors, including the MI Grappler Wrestlers of the year from the past two seasons, Ben Bennett (08) and UM freshman Justin Zeerip (07) who are both entered at 174lbs.
