Spartans route Eagles in Thursday Night Throwdown
12/3 - Michigan State won 8 of 10 matches in Ypsilanti tonight for
what their "Thursday Night Throwdown" with Eastern Michigan.
The Spartans picked up all their bonus points from St. Johns grads
as Dan Osterman and Tyler Dickensen scored major decisions at
133 and 197lbs.
Osterman, a true freshman, was making his debut in the Spartan
lineup and did so in impressive fashion with a 15-6 major decision
over another former Division 2 state champion in Andrew Novak.
Osterman was not the only true freshman who made a breakout
debut tonight. EMU freshman and Lapeer East native Phil Joseph
scored a 1st period fall at 184lbs in his first varsity action for the
Eagles. Joseph was a Division 2 171lb state champion last year.
The only Eagle besides Joseph to win was 18th ranked Chris Jenkins at 125lbs, who used three 3rd period nearfall points to ice a 5-0 shutout over MSU's Eric Olanowski.
The dual was a great showcase of homegrown Michigan talent as there were a total of 7 former Michigan High School State Champions who stepped onto the mat and 7 of the 10 weight classes were won by Michigan natives. Two weight classes pitted former MI state champs against one another and MSU won them both as Osterman downed Novak and David Cheza upended JJ Johnson at 149lbs.
