3/21 - Michigan's most prominent wrestling name of the past decade finished
up his storied Iowa Hawkeye collegiate career last night in Omaha as Davison
native Brent Metcalf won the 149lb NCAA Title with a 3-2 win over Ohio State's
Lance Palmer, avenging a loss from the Big Ten finals two weeks ago.
Metcalf, who was 4x undefeated state champion for Davison High School, won
his 2nd NCAA Title to lead his Hawkeyes to their 3rd straight National Team
Title.

Another historical career for Michigan wrestling ended this weekend as the
Franklin Gomez era officially come to an end for Michigan State.  The Spartan
senior, who was a National Champion last year, failed to repeat as champion
after falling in the semifinals to Daniel Dennis of Iowa.  Gomez bounced back
yesterday morning with a fall in the consolation semifinals and an 8-0 win over
Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State in the consolation finals to finish 3rd and end
his career as a 3x All-American.

Central Michigan finished 12th in the team standings behind their three
all-american finishes.  Freshman Ben Bennett was the highest placing
Chippewa, as the former MI Grappler Prep Wrestler of the Year made the
podium in his first year in the CMU lineup.  Bennett finished 6th at 174lbs,
while senior Steve Brown and Jarod Trice both finished 8th at their respective
weight classes to earn their first All-American honor as well.  Brown placed above his seed, finishing 8th at 157lbs after coming in as the #12 seed.  Trice, meanwhile, battled back to finish 8th at 285lbs after losing in the opening round Thursday morning.

Cornell finished 2nd to Iowa in the team standings
and like Iowa, they were led by a former Michigan
prep standout.  Former 3x Allegan state champ
Cam Simaz finished 3rd at 197lbs for Cornell,
notching his 2nd all-american plaque in as many
tries.  The sophomore's only loss was to eventual
champion Jake Varner of Iowa State in the
semifinals and he avenged a couple regular
season losses by beating Hudson Taylor of
Maryland in the finals.  Simaz will likely come
back next year as the top ranked 197lber in the
country as the top two were both seniors.
