2011 NCAA Championships: Day 1 Michigan Recap

The NCAA Tournament got underway
yesterday in Philadelphia and the
quarterfinals are set for this morning.
Central Michigan has the highest number
of wrestlers still alive in the championships
bracket with three quarterfinalists, however,
Michigan is slightly ahead of the Chipps in
the team standings as the Wolverines sit
11th after the first day of action and CMU
is 23rd.
UM's Kellen Russell, the top seed at 141,
is no surprise in the quarterfinals, however,
the big shocker of the day was unseeded
redshirt freshman Eric Grajales getting
past #1 Darrion Caldwell of NC State.
Grajales was leading the match when Caldwell injury defaulted, moving the Wolverine 149lber to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Three Chippewas are wrestling in the quarters today as their trio of all-americans showed poise scoring two wins yesterday. Scotti Sentes (133), Ben Bennett (174), and Jarod Trice (285) will wrestle for a spot in the Semifinals today. Sentes upset #6 seed Tony Ramos of Iowa in the 2nd round of action.
Two Michigan natives, Cam Simaz of Allegan (Cornell University) and Jon Reader of Davison (Iowa State) won their opening bouts to move on to the quarterfinals as well. Both Simaz and Reader are the #1 seeds.
