Kellen Russell and Jon Reader advance to NCAA Finals

NCAA Tournament Coverage Section

3/19/11 - With two days in the books at the 2011 NCAA Championships the finals
are set and the All-Americans have been established.  A total of 7 wrestlers with
Michigan ties have locked up All-American status, including 4 wrestlers who hail
from the Great Lakes State.

The University of Michigan's Kellen Russell title hopes remain alive as the top seed
fended off close matches in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals to advance to the 141lb
finals.  Russell won both matches via the final overtime criteria of riding time.  He
will now face Boris Novachkov of Cal Poly in the Finals tonight, which will air live on
ESPN at 7:30pm. 

Davison, Michigan native Jon Reader moved onto the 184lb finals with a 4-3 win over
Chris Heinrich of Virginia and the Iowa State senior is now one win away from a
national title.  The former 3x Michigan State Champ will wrestle the #7 seed from
Stanford in the finals.

Central Michigan has three All-Americans as Scotti Sentes, Ben Bennett, and Jarod Trice have all ensured their 2nd all-american performance.  Trice fell in the Championship Semifinals to Ryan Flores of American 4-0 and will attempt to wrestle back for 3rd today. 

Sentes is in the same spot as Trice, however, he got there the hard way after losing in the quarterfinals the Florida native won two consolation matches to advance to the top 6 at 133lbs.  Bennett won a tough match in the blood round over Mike Benefial of Oklahoma State before falling to #2 Ed Ruth of Penn State in the Consolation Quarterfinals.  He will wrestle for 7th today.

Two more Michigan natives will wrestle their final consolation bouts today, but have secured All-American status.  Cam Simaz of Cornell (Allegan) and Andrew Nadhir of Northwestern (Detroit CC) will wrestle in the consolation semifinals this morning and are could finish as high as 3rd. 

Simaz lost a thrilling semifinal match last night to #4 Dustin Kilgore of Kent State, but has locked up his 3rd All-American honor in as many years of college wrestling.
