5 Michigan Cadets undefeated after 1st day of Freestyle
7/22 - After the first day of freestyle wrestling here
in Fargo, 10 Michigan Cadets still remain in the
tournament, 5 of whom who have yet to lose.
Taylor Massa, fresh off his Greco title two days ago,
got off to a fast start with three falls and two techinical
falls. Of Massa's dominant wins include a :39 fall
over Chase Sanchez of Kansas, who was a greco
all-american two days ago.
Also dominant in day 1 was Greco runner-up Ben
Whitford, who went 6-0 and had only one match go
three periods at 112lbs.
Jacob Schmitt scored the biggest win of the day as
he recorded a technical fall over Colton Howell of
Missouri, who won the 91lb Greco National Title two
days ago and beat Schmitt to win his pool.
After Howell scored 5 quick points in the opening 15
seconds of the 1st period, Schmitt battled back,
scoring 11 unanswered points to win the first period.
Schmitt then won the 2nd period 7-1 to score a tech-fall over the Greco National Champion. He is now 3-0 heading into tommorow.
Returning Cadet Freestyle All-American Jordan Thomas of Greenville started off slow with a three period nail biter win in his first match, but picked up steam from there on with a technical fall, a first period fall, and a shutout win to move on to the 2nd day with a 4-0 record at 160lbs.
DCC state champ and FILA Cadet All-American Alec Mooradian started off undefeated as well, going 4-0 at 119lbs.
Division 2 state runner-up Jordan Wohlfert suffered his 1st loss in the 3rd round when he was caught for a defensive fall by Brady Massaro of Maryland who stepped over his gut wrench, however, he battled back with two big wins, including a three period war over Cadet Folkstyle All-American Gabe Moreno of Iowa to remain alive.
Greco All-American Alex Calandrino started off the day with 4 wins before falling to Greco Champ Tyler Fraley of New Jersey. He is now 4-1 at 105lbs heading into tommorow.
Travis Curley (140), Adam Coon (189), and Jim Walsh (285) also advanced to the second day with one loss.
Cadet freestyle action will resume tommorow afternoon at 3:30pm CST. The Junior Freestyle Tournament will get underway tommorow morning at 9:30am.
