6 Cadets lock up Freestyle All-American honors
7/23 - Two days ago the state of Michigan had 6 Cadets
all-american in greco-roman and today, Team Michigan
repeated the feat as 6 wrestlers remain alive heading into
the third and final day of competetion.
Jacob Schmitt (91), Ben Whitford (112), Alec Mooradian
(119), Taylor Massa (152), and Jordan Thomas (160) are all
undefeated in their respective weights heading into
tommorow while Jordan Wohlfert (140) is 6-1.
Whitford scored wins over back-to-back all-americans
today as he battled back to beat returning Cadet Freestyle
All-American Nathan Kraisser of Maryland and then scored
a dominant win over FILA Cadet Greco Champ Brandon
Jeske of Virginia. Whitford is now one of 4 wrestlers
remaining in his pool. He will wrestle Stephen Myers of
Ohio first thing in the morning and is on a collision course
to meet with Eric DeVos of Iowa, who is the only other
wrestler in his pool with a perfect record.
Taylor Massa continued his quest for a repeat Triple Crown
with another technical fall today. Massa now has only
match left to make the finals against Logan Molina of
Nebraska.
Jacob Schmitt wrestled tacked on another win at 91lbs today
and he is also just win away from being in the freestyle finals.
Schmitt will wrestle Phillip Laux of Iowa tommorow morning and a win will put him in the finals. These two are no strangers to each other, Laux beat Schmitt in the Greco 3rd place match earlier this week and Schmitt beat Laux last month at the Greco Duals.
Jordan Thomas won two more this afternoon and he has now moved into a round robin at 160lbs with Isiah Meade of Delaware and Sam Brooks of Illinois. Brooks was the Greco Runner Up earlier this week and Meade is a returning Cadet Freestyle All-American. Thomas will wrestle both of them in the morning.
Alec Mooradian continues to work his way through the 119lb bracket as he scored three more wins this afternoon to move to 7-0 at 119lbs. Mooradian has moved to a round robin in his pool with Brandon Sorensen of Iowa and Kevin Norstrem of Florida. Sorensen and Norstrem are two of the premiere middle school wrestlers in the country and are both ranked in the top 10 of the incoming freshman class by InterMat.
Jordan Wohlfert is the only MIchigander left who was a loss, however, Wohlfert has moved himself into the drivers seat of his 140lb pool after scoring big wins over Greco Runner-Up Zach Brunson of Oregon and Burke Paddock of New York. Wohlfert will now wrestle Tre Scott of Pennsylvania tommorow morning and if he wins he will be in the 140lb freestyle finals.
The Cadet Freestyle competetion will pick back up tommorow morning at 9:30am CST when they will finish up all pool matches. Then, the finals will go down here in the FargoDome tommorow afternoon at 1:00pm CST. Michigan is in position to do some big things as all 6 of our All-Americans are in a position to make the finals.
