6 Michigan Cadets undefeated after 1st day of Greco-Roman
7/18 - The first day of Cadet Greco-Roman is in the books here in
Fargo, ND and six Michiganders remain alive in the tournament. All
six Michigan Cadets who survived the grueling first day of action are
all still undefeated in their pool.
The most notable performance of the first day came from St Johns
8th grader Ben Whitford who went 5-0 at 112lbs, including a win over
FILA Cadet Greco National Champ Brandon Jeske.of Virginia.
Whitford used a late headlock to claim the opening stanza, however
Jeske bounced back with a solid 5-3 2nd period win to force a third
and final period. In the final period Jeske used a 3-point throw during
the first 1:30 to take a 3-0 lead and get to start on top for the final :30.
After stopping Jeske's turn attempt Whitford scored a takedown to
make the score 3-1. Whitford was then awarded a 2-point leg foul to
tie the score at 3-3, which is how it would end. The leg foul penalty
on Jeske gave Whitford the tie breaking criteria and the win in what
was a crazy series of events.
Whitford is now 5-0 and in command of his pool, which still consists
of 6 wrestlers who remain alive in the tournament. He will meet
Brandon Brindley of Alabama tommorow afternoon when the Cadets return to action. Brindley is also undefeated at 112lbs.
St Johns freshman and reigining Triple Crown Winner Taylor Massa continued his
dominance at 152lbs this afternoon as he scored two more technical falls. Massa is
now 4-0 and he has tech-falled all of his opponents without losing a period.
Yet another St Johns Red Wing excelling this afternoon was 8th grader Jacob Schmitt.
Schmitt went 3-0 at 91lbs with a technical fall and two pins. He has already locked up
his first Fargo all-american honors, and is now just one win away from the Greco Finals.
Schmitt will meet returning Fargo Double All-American and 2009 Cadet Folkstyle National
Champion Colton Howell of Missouri for a spot in the finals.
Rogers City state champ Devin Pommerenke has also locked up all-american honors, at 285lbs. Pommerenke went 3-0 today with two falls and will now meet Nick Kusekabel of Ohio tommorow, who is also undefeated. Pommerenke is one of four wrestlers who remain alive in his pool so he has guaranteed himself a spot in the top 8.
Alex Calendrino of Howell, who was a Division 1 state runner-up this year at 103lbs, is 5-0 after the first day of competetion. Calendrino, who will receive a bye in the first round of action tommorow, is one of five wrestlers remaining in his pool at 105lbs.
Anthony Abro of Canton is the last, most surprising wrestler to remain undefeated for Team Michigan. Abro, who wrestled 152lbs for Canton this year, is currently 4-0 at 189lbs and with only 5 wrestlers remaining in his pool he is sitting in great shape to be an All-American.
Action will resume tommorow morning in Fargo with the 1st session of Junior Greco-Roman beggining tommorow morning at 9:00am CST. Then the Cadets will be back on the mats at 3:30pm.
