Michigan Juniors jump out to fast start in freestyle
7/23 - Team Michigan's Junior squad bounced back from a dissapointing Greco-Roman performance with a great showing today in the first day of Freestyle competetion.
12 Michiganders remain alive in the tournament, including 5 who have undefeated records.
Returning Junior Freestyle All-American Brenan Lyon came out with a techincal fall and a :23 fall at 105lbs. Dan Osterman, fresh off his Greco All-American performance two days ago, came out hot as well with 4 wins, including two falls and none of his matches went to a third period.
2x state champ Ryan Nieman's freestyle debut has been smooth thus far as he is 4-0 at 135lbs and has yet to lose a period. Nieman scored a big win over Tony Buxton of Blair Academy, NJ, who was 3rd in the National Prep Championships and will be wrestling for Harvard next year.
2009 Division 1 state champ Josh Houldsworth of Holly is 5-0 at 140lbs, including a big win of his own over returning Junior Freestyle All-American Luke Vaith of Minnesota.
Garrett Schaner is the final undefeated record as he will take a 5-0 record at 145lbs heading into the second day of competetion. Schaner has battled with two wins that went to a third period.
7 wrestlers will head into tommorow morning's session with one loss. Kyle Pillars (98lbs), Dan Flowers (119lbs), Joe Rendina (125lbs), Dez Jones (152lbs), Mike Curby (160lbs), and Nathan Spieth (285) all have a loss, but remain alive in the tournament.
Curby scored a big win in his final match of the day over returning Cadet Freestyle National Runner-Up Ronnie Balfour of Oklahoma. Curby downed Balfour, who finished 2nd in the Greco competetion earlier this week, in two straight periods 7-6, 6-1.
The Juniors will weigh in tommorow morning and then resume action at 9:30am CST.
