Division 1 & 3 Semifinals Session Notes

Sorry, I am running a little behind I will focus on the Holt-Hartland match this morning. Matches for both D1 and D3 started at 112 pounds. Before I get started here is where the other meets stand in terms of school

Rockford 11, Lake Orion 6
Holt 3, Hartland 3
Allegan 3, Dundee 3
Swan Valley 9, Goodrich 0

125- Big match here between Kyle Hanton of Holt and Hartland’s Jeff Lopez who is coming down from 130. At the end of the first, Hanton leads 2-1. This is the epitome of a big swing match.
Hanton decides to go on bottom in the second an d Lopez breaks him down hard with a spiral ride. Injury timeout for Lopez. Hartland has a couple potentially huge weight drops with Kyle Summerfield weighing in at 160 despite qualifying for states at 171. Hanton is getting a lot of movement, but Lopez is doing a fine job following him. Lopez very nearly tilts Hanton for back points.
Lopez goes down and Hanton works a bar arm tilt for two points. Lopez gets away and is down two with a minute to go. Lopez almost scores off a scramble. Lopez is shooting like a madman right now. Hanton staves off a late effort by Lopez. There is no telling how huge that could be. I’m sure Hartland was counting on Lopez winning that match.

Holt 6, Hartland 3

130- Holt puts Michael Jones up against Doug Baughman. Jones gets the early takedown off a flurry. We’re in the middle of an extended blood timeout here with 45 seconds to go. I don’t know who is bleeding, but they have spent an inordinate amount of time cleaning the mat.
Jones gets the takedown after a Baughman escape. More blood time. Baughman gets another point and they are on their feet. Baughman gets around after a Jones shot for a huge takedown at the buzzer. 4-4.
It appears Jones is bleeding out of the nose. He has had to take four timeouts so far and is likely is serious danger of exhausting his five minutes of blood time. Jones is on bottm in the the third. Baughman takes him over with a chicken wing. Jones looks like it would be next to impossible for him to get out. Amazingly, Jones survives but gives up two sets of three-point near falls. I’m wondering if the bleeding has taken Jones out of his element at all or if Baughman is just that tough on top.
Not surprisingly, Baughman takes top in the third up 10-4. The match is stopped once again for blood. Baughman isn’t turning Jones this period, but Jones hasn’t come close to getting away. Baughman gets Jones on his back once again in the crucifix position. Jones fights it off. More blood time. HUGE reversal AND near fall from Jones to stave off the major. Things are not going Hartland’s way early on.

Holt 6, Hartland 6

135- Holt’s Tyler Jackson gets a takedown in the first 15 seconds against Bryan Hughes. Hughes gets a reversal off a gazoni (sp?) to tie the match up going into the second.
Jackson starts the second period on bottom. Jackson gets a reversal off a very funky scramble in which he was momentarily on his back. Hughes stands up and gets away before earning a takedown in the closing seconds to take a 5-4 lead.
Hughes chooses down, but Jackson stands him up. Hughes gets five off a takedown to a cradle before Jackson reverses control. 11-6. Hughes gets a reversal, Jackson escapes. Hughes gets five off a Peterson roll to win 18-7. Huge break for the Eagles.

Hartland 10, Holt 6

140- It’s Hartalnd’s John Julien against Jeff Baker. Julien gets the early takedown and starts to work a chicken wing but doesn’t het any back points.
Julien is up 7-0 after a couple near falls going into the third. Baker gets the esacape and takedown to cut his lead to four. Baker rides out and prevents the major decision.

Hartland 13, Holt 6

Other scores
Lake Orion 18, Rockford 15
Dundee 17, Allegan 3
Swan Valley 19, Goodrich 7 approaching Goodrich’s  strong weights.

---------

145- We pick up action midway through the second with Holt’s Kyle Shaw leading Sean Hultberg 4-3. Shaw does a nice job fighting near fall off Hultberg’s chicken wing to maintain the lead.
Shaw spots Hultberg a point by standing him up in the third. Hultberg takes the lead off a single to a trip. Hultberg rides out to give the Eagles a huge swing match.

Hartland 16, Holt 6

152- Leyrer pins in less than 45 seconds against Kyle Reggorah.

Hartland 16, Holt 12

160- This is one of the big matches of the meet as Kyle Summerfield bumps down from 171 to take on the Rams’ Josh Shaw. Lots of action but no points in the first.
Summerfield get one and then a takedown off a single against Shaw. Shaw catches Summerfield on his back briefly for four points. Huge change of events as Shaw carries a 4-3 lead into the third.
Shaw goes down and gets a quick reversal only to let Summerfield go. 6-4. Shaw gets in on a double but Summerfield stubbornly fights it off before going out of bounds. Shaw scores off a late Summerfield effort to get three for the Rams.

Hartland 16, Holt 15
171- Mike Andring of Holt gets the early takedown against Davison transfer Josh Connell before Connell works for an escape.. Andring gets another takedown before time expires.
Andring leads 6-2 midway through the second.  Andring gets another takedown at the edge of the mat before standing Connell up. Andring keeps piling up the points faster than I can type. In the third, he leads 14-3. 14-4. Connell just can’t keep up Andring, up 11, has a minute to work for a tech fall. 18-6 with 29 seconds left. 20-7 with ten. Andring gets the tech at the buzzer. I thought this would actually be a close match. Stunnung.

Holt 20, Hartland 16

Other scores
Lake Orion 21, Rockford 21 with Gros wrestling Stefanski
Allegan 22, Dundee 20
Swan Valley 26, Goodrich 16

------

189- Corbin Boone of Holt gets a takedown and two near fall in the first minute. Boone goes down in the second. Boone easily escapes. Boone gets a takedown, lets Ramirez go. Another two for Boone, another one for Ramirez. Hartland is going to need some big help at 285 and 103.
Boone stands Ramirez up to start the third and gets a takedown roughly 30 seconds in. Boone leads 11-4 after letting Ramirez up. Boone secures the major with another takedown. 13-4.

Holt 24, Hartland 16

215- Mireles of Holt can put the match away with a win of any sort against Dan Spadafora. This is actually turning out to be the least competitive meet this morning. The rest are within three points. Gros beat Stefanski to give LO a 24-21 lead going into 285.
Dundee just secured the win over Allegan with a pin at 285. Back to this match, Mireles is up 5-0 after catching Spadafora on his back. Solid riding by Mireles is making it hard for Spadafora to even get off his belly.
Spadafora stands Mireles up in the third, presumably knowing he needs a throw to pin Mireles. Goodrich knocks off Swan Valley 30-26 on the strength of a 7-2 CC Weber win. Mireles takes an 8-0 win with 30 seconds left and holds on for the major and the likely Holt victory.

Holt 28, Hartland 16

I’ll switch over to the Rockford-Lake Orion meet now with the #1 Rams in a fight for their life against the unseeded Lake O Dragons. Rockford leads 25-24 going into the do-or-die 103 match.

103- Rockford’s Tyler VanRooyen scores the quick takedown against John Atwater. VanRooyen turns Atwater with a power half for three points. VanRooyan is totally dominating.
VanRooyan reverses and gets another three to start the second period off. VanRooyan gets another three. Another turn for VanRooyan means five team points and an all-Ram final.

Rockford 30, Lake Orion 24 Final
Dundee 32, Allegan 22 Final

Freddie Rodriguez of Holl is thoroughly dominating an excellent Ross Kantola. Kantola, I believe, was a regional champion. Right now, he doesn’t look like he can stay on the same mat as Rodriguez. Rodriguez ends up teching Kantola 18-3.

Holt 33, Hartland 22 Final
