Division 1 Quarterfinals Running Notes

Division One matches begin at 285. For all intents and purposes, I will be focusing on the Lake Orion/ Detroit Catholic Central match while keeping an eye on the rest of the competition.

285- Lake Orion sends out the 34-12 senior Tyler Benson to match up with the 12-10 sophomore Nate Wilkins from DCC who bumps up from 215. Benson controls the first two periods, and I’ll pick up the action in the third period with Benson ahead 3-1 going on top.
Wilkins gets an escape with 30 seconds remaining, now down. HUGE arm drag by Wilkins with 11 seconds to go gives him the 4-3 lead. Wilkins wins 4-3.

DCC3, LO 0

103- Todd Melick heads out for DCC as John Atwater checks into scores table for LO. 30 Seconds into the match, Melick already leads 4-1. Melick lets Atwater up and then whips him over for a pin at 1:21

DCC9, LO 0

112- The sensational DCC freshman Alec Mooradian defends his undefeated record against Miguel Mattsen. Mooradian scores on an early double leg takedown. Mooradian being very aggressive so far, trying to turn Mattsen before letting him go. At the end of the first, Mooradian leads 6-2 on the strength of three takedowns.
Mooradian chooses neutral for the second period. Quick takedown for Mooradian. Mattsen has been strong on his base on bottom but can’t seem to handle Mooradian on his feet. Mooradian finally gets near fall. He leads 13-3 at the end of two.
Mattsen goes on bottom. Mooradian lets Mattsen up before taking him down to his back for the pin.

DCC 15, LO 0

119 – LO sends out Jake Pratt to take on Justin Melick. In the matchup of state qualifiers, Melick scores the early takedown. Pratt gets an escape and goes right for the outside single. Melick fights off the takedown, and Pratt chooses bottom down 2-1.
Melick breaks Pratt down immediately and is maintaining tremendous pressure on top. Melick gets three near fall points on a bundle and now has Pratt on his back once more. Three more points. Melick takes top leading 8-1.
Melick gets a quick breakdown and uses a chicken wing to go on top 11-1. Melick pins.

DCC 21, LO 0
Lake O has some catching up to do.

125- DCC sends Mike Perales out against LO’s Doug Mack. Mack is the heavy favorite and his team needs bonus points from him to make up for their very disappointing start. Mack gets a couple of takedowns in the first minute and a half. Mack takes neutral going into the second up 4-1.
Mack scores on a double and leads 6-2 after letting Perales go. Mack has been shooting nearly every second he has been on the mat. He leads 9-3 going into the third.
Super quick takedown for the ultra-strong Mack. He continues to let Perales loose. He leads 13-5. Nothing fancy to what Mack is doing, just straightforward doubles. 23-10 with 20 seconds to go. Mack gets the takedown for the 25-10 technical fall with 12 seconds left. Boy did the Dragons need that.

DCC 21, LO 5

130- DCC’s Charlie Joseph bumps up from 125 to take on Matt Musary. Joseph is dominating in the early going up 4-0. That is the score at end of the first.
30 seconds into the second Joseph has Musary on his back. PIN. This match is absolutely falling away from a very good Lake Orion squad.

Rockford 22, Roseville 12
Holt 21. Midland 9
Hartland 16, John Glenn 10

135- State qualifiers Doug Eldridge from DCC and AJ Filgger from LO. Lots of nice shots and nice defenses. Tons of action but no score after one. Fligger takes bottom.
Fligger keeps standing up but has a hard time getting away. Eldridge warned for stalling after throwing the legs in on a standing Fligger. Fligger gets a reversal, and begins to dominate Eldridge. 2-0 Fligger at the end of two. Eldridge takes neutral.
Eldridge blasts double but Fligger comes up with an excellent defense. Eldridge secures a takedown off double, and Fligger escapes immediately. 3-2. Eldridge tries another blast double but Fligger blocks with a front headlock and runs out the clock. 3-2 in the best match of the meet so far.

DCC 27, LO 8

140- I looked away for a second and missed the whole match. Appearantly LO came up with a desperately needed pin.

DCC 27, LO 14

145- Returing state placer Justin Ruddy gets a quick early takedown against Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan stands up and cuts away from Ruddy. Ruddy gets a takedown in the closing seconds. 4-1
Ruddy scores a quick two at the beginning of the second before letting Sullivan go. He then takes Sullivan down to his back and leads 10-2. Sullivan earns an escape off a scramble to cut Ruddy’s lead to seven going into the third.
Ruddy now leads 11-3. Double makes it 13-3. FYI, John Glenn just got a pin at 145 to cut #3 Hartland’s lead to 22-20. They could have had the lead but gave up a pin at 140 when their wrestler was ahead.
Ruddy ends up winning by major decision

DCC 27, LO 18

152- Getting to be more competitive as Trevor Oconnor of DCC takes on LO’s Jake Arnold. Arnold scores the first takedown off an OConnor shot, but Urso gets away quickly. Arnold takes bottom leading 2-1.
DCC has done a great job of riding today, and OConnor continues that trend in the beginning of the second. John Glenn pulls ahead of Hartland 26-22 with a pin at 152.
OConnor does a brilliant job of riding, giving up no points in the second. He takes down.
Holt and Rockford both lead by double digits.
Arnold holds on despite a valiant late scramble by OConnor to win 2-1.

I will now switch focus to the John Glenn-Hartland match

189- Right now Noah Ramirez of Hartland is in control of an unknown John Glenn wrestler 6-3. Hartland leads the meet 28-26. It looks like the surprise pin at 140 may have saved the Eagles.
6-3 Ramirez as the second period begins with the wrestlers on their feet. Lake Orion won 42-27. Ramirez has John Glenn on his back. PIN. Match over mathematically. John Glenn’s Cinderella run comes to a close.
