Division 2 and 4 Semifinals Notes

Would I rather be any other place on Earth? Well, maybe Jessica Alba’s hot tub. Aside from that however, who could pass up the opportunity to watch the best teams in Division 2 and Division fight for the ultimate prize. This morning’s session was absolutely fantastic, and this session has just as good of matchups to offer.
All matches will start at 135. I will be focusing on the Oxford-Lakeshore match, but if a Jackson Morse-Taylor Mass bout comes up. I will shift my focus to that matchup of studs.

135- I am sure the program is wrong here so there is no way for me to know the names of the individuals. Lakeshore threw Oxford to his back right off the whistle but gave up a reversal late in the period.
The wrestlers start neutral in the second period. Oxford gets a takedown. After a Lakeshore reversal, Oxford catches Lakeshore on his back for the PIN.

Oxford 6, Lakeshore 0

140- Nick Humes of Lakeshore battles Ben Ralston. Humes gets an early takedown and starts working a spiral ride. Ralston gets a point at the end.
Humes starts the second period on top. Humes has Ralston in an outside cradle but can’t score. Ralston gets an escape out of a flurry. Humes gets a takedown off a front headlock.
Humes gets a reversal right off the whistle to go ahead 6-2. Humes keeps trying to work both the inside and outside cradles. Ralston gets an escape. Humes gets a takedown. Ralston reverses. Humes gets Lakeshore on the board with an 8-5 victory.

Oxford 6, Lakeshore 3

145- Lakeshore sends out Caleb Nitz to wrestle Bo Cantara. Nitz scores off a powerful driving double but gives up a point to a locked hands call. Cantara works his way up and pops his head out for a reversal. A crazy flurry leaves the match 6-5 Nitz at the end of the first period.
Cantara had to take a lengthy injury timeout but decided to try to wrestle apparently without a functioning right arm. It seems it’s too much for Cantara. He defaulted.

Lakeshore 9, Oxford 6

152- Mike Myer of Oxford takes on Christian Nitz. Myer takes him down and dominates the first period.
Big news from the other D2 semis. Dan Osterman bumped up to 140 from his normal weight of 130 to knock off Andrew in a thrilling 8-4 decision where Osterman scored five points in the last 30 seconds. St. Johns leads 6-0 after two matches.
Back to 152, Myer is soundly in front 12-3 trying to compensate for the big swing with Cantara’s injury. Escape and takedown later, Myer is up 14-4. Myer gets two back points to win 16-4.

Oxford 10, Lakeshore 9
160- Lakeshore’s Tyler Humes scores a takedown one second into his match against AJ Logan. Logan escapes after a minute and gets a takedown of his own. Humes ties it up with an escape.
Humes takes a one point lead with an escape to start the second. Logan spins off a front headlock to get a takedown. Another Humes escape ties the match up. Humes gets a takedown off a botched fireman’s carry.
Humes earns three off a crossface cradle to go ahead 10-5. Sorry, bigger things have come up. Humes wins 14-6

MASSA v. MORSE
Morse scores right away on a double leg. Massa escapes. Massa earns a takedown that I foolishly missed. Massa Is riding Morse very strong.
Morse takes bottom in the second down 3-2. Morse is ridden for about 45 seconds before he uses a chin whip to escape. Morse throws a beautiful headlock that he only gets two for because it went out of bounds. Joe Delia from Wrestling Addix doesn’t even think Morse should have gotten the takedown.  Morse rides Massa the rest of the period to maintain a 5-3 advantage.
Massa goes on bottom in the third. 40 seconds in, Massa still hasn’t gotten away.
Massa escapes and gets a takedown to go ahead 7-6. Massa rides out and wins 7-6. HUMONGOUS win for Massa and St. Johns who now leads 13-0.

Other scores
Lakeshore 19, Oxford 10
Hesperia 24, Manchester 6
Iron Mountain 13, Hudson 6

---------

Sorry for the delay. There was just a lot of chaos here at the media table after the Massa-Morse battle.
Anyways Lakeshore leads Oxford 19-14 heading into the 215 match.

215- We have a rare battle of freshman at an upper weight as Oxford’s Prescott Line takes on Kyle Spear. Line looks strong early, getting a takedown and 2 back points.
Line goes down to start the second. Line gets the escape after a couple standups. Oxford may need Line to get a pin here to make up for some lost points earlier. Line scores to go up 7-0.
A couple big escapes from Spear has the match 7-2. Line takes Spear down then lets him up. A takedown makes it 11-3. Spear comes up with a huge escape with seven seconds to go to hold Line to a decision. Big save for Lakeshore.

Lakeshore 19, Oxford 17

285- Talking to some Lakeshore fans yesterday, they were very concerned to say the least about how they matched up in the upper weights with Oxford. I imagine any points that can save would be seen as a win. That said, Trevor Noonan is looking alright for Lakeshore against Dylan Smith. Only down 2-1 at the end of one.

-------------------------

TERRIFIC fight by Noonan who looked nailed to the mat in a crucifix. He even got an escape.
Smith gets a takedown early in the third to go up 7-2. Noonan gets a reversal. Smith escapes, takes down and then pins Noonan with 20 seconds left. That was a big one for Oxford.

Oxford 23, Lakeshore 29

103- Lakeshore stud freshman Tyler Daniels takes on Jacob Peasley. Daniels gets a very quick takedown, and Peasley spends the rest of the period broken down on his belly.
Daniels starts on top in the second. Daniels is thoroughly dominating, but Peasley is doing a good job not giving anything.
Daniels reverses quickly to go up 4-0. Peasley gets an escape. Daniels gets an escape. I wonder if Dainels wishes he would have started cutting him sooner. Daniels catches Peasley in a cradle. Peasley gets out of it but gives up the major decision to tie the meet.

Oxford 23, Lakeshore 23

112- Calvin Cavanaugh heads out for Oxford to take on Tyler Frese. Both wrestlers are taking shots, but as of yet, no points are scored. The first period ends scoreless.
Cavanaugh starts down. Frese rides tough. Cavanaugh escapes. Frese gets a takedown off a beautiful double to go ahead by one.
Frese starts on bottom and escapes in a hurry. Frese pulls off a very nice spinning takedown to go ahead 5-1. Frese gets another takedown at the end to win 7-2.

Lakeshore 26, Oxford 23

Other Scores
Lowell 23, St. Johns 17
Hesperia 42, Manchester 9
Hudson 25, Iron Mountain 22

119- I pick this up in the third period with a potential upset brewing Oxford’s 12-11 Mike Thomas is leading 32-6 Brett Glaske 5-2. Thomas scores off a Glaske shot to win 7-2.

Oxford 26, Lakeshore 26

Hesperia 42, Manchester 18

125- Critical swing match with two matches left. At the end of one, Oxford’s Zac Miller leads Aaron Belanger 2-1.
Belanger gets a reversal at the start of the period. Belanger keeps looking like he’s riding high  but manages to stay in control. By the way, Lowell beat St. Johns 34-25.
Miller goes down in the third trailing 3-2. Belanger keeps sinking in a deep power half. He gets three near fall as time runs out.
Lakeshore 29, Oxford 26

130- I think it all comes down to this. Oxford’s Matt Frisch jumps out to a 7-1 lead before I can figure out I can even look up. Frisch already has a major decision score over freshman Travis Dragomer. The first period ends with Frisch up 11-3.
Frisch gets a takedown 10 seconds into the second. It looks like Oxford probably has this duel on ice. Frisch gets the technical fall. Oxford is penalized a point for Frisch letting Dragomer off his back and then stomping in the middle of the mat, but it doesn’t matter since they were ahead by two any ways.

Oxford 30, Lakeshore 29 Final

Hudson 43, Iron Mountain 22 Final

D2 Finals
Lowell vs. Oxford

D4 Finals
Hudson vs. Hesperia
