11/3 - The Border Wars Nationals has always attracted some of Michigan's most
talented wrestlers for a great pre-season event, but this year the tournament started
spreading and attracting some big name out of state grapplers.

In the high school division 8 of the 14 champions came from out-of-state, including
3x Illinois state champ Tony Ramos who won the 130lb championship.  Ramos was
co-champion with his Izzy Trained teammate Colton Rasche.  Ramos is a 2x Fargo
All-American and Rasche is a former Fila Cadet All-American.

Among the Michigan preps winning Border Wars National titles was D3 state runner
up Darius Wass of Swan Valley, who won at 119lbs, and D1 state placer Josh
Houldsworth who won at 152lbs with a fall in the finals.

Division 2 state runner-up Ryan Olep put together a solid performance as well, iwinning the 171lb crown with a 7-3 win over Alex Sanders of Illinois.  The 171lb weight featured a few Michigan all-staters, including Jake Hyde of Holly and Chris Lucas of Grand Haven, who finished 2nd and 5th, respectively.

In another Michigan vs Illinois finals matchup, Anthony Pavlich of Westland John Glenn downed Mark Savenok of Illinois in the 112lb finals.  Pavlich was a Division 1 state placer last year at 103lbs.

Kegan Arthur of Petoskey and Troy Lamson of Swan Valley were the final two Michiganders to win Border Wars crowns.  Lamson did so in dominant fashion with a fall in the finals while Arthur edged Ryan Watts of Ferndale in a tight finals bout.

The youth divisions of the event featured many of Michigan's top name elementary and middle school stars.  7 members of the 2008 MI Grappler All-Future team won titles: Brenden McRill in 9-10, Angus Arthur, Mark Hall, and Justin Oliver in 11-12, and Dominic Sutermeister, Zack Cooper, and Adam Coon in 13-14.
