4 Michiganders advance to Freestyle Finals in Vegas
Youtsey, Rendina, Morse, Thomas going for 1st tommorow
4/9 - Four Michigan grapplers won their pools today at the
Western Junior Regional in Las Vegas, NV to advance to
the Freestyle Finals tommorow. Conor Youtsey (119), Joe
Rendina (125), Andrew Morse (135), and Jordan Thomas
(145) will all be wrestling for Regional Titles tommorow.
Rendina, Morse, and Thomas all
went undefeated in their pools to
advance to the finals.
Morse was dominant as he won
7 matches all together without
losing a single period, including
a 3-0, 2-0 shutout over Iowa
state champ Cody Caldwell.
Morse will now square off with
Caldwell's Waverly Shell-Rock
High School teammate and
another Iowa state champ in
Jake Ballweg in tommorow's
finals.
Rendina, who came in fresh off
his runner-up performance in
Greco, also went 7-0 today to
win his pool, surrendering only
one period on the day. Rendina
is slated to meet Jesse Hillhouse
of Wyoming in the 125lb freestyle
finals.
Thomas surrendered only one period as well as he won 6 in a row to win Pool A of the 145lb bracket. Thomas will now meet returning Cadet Freestyle National Champion Destin McCauley of Minnesota, who knocked off St Johns' Taylor Massa to win the other pool at 145lbs. The Massa-McCauley match pitted the two returning Cadet Freestyle Champs from a year ago, as McCauley won at 135lbs and Massa won it at 140lbs. McCauley, who is currently ranked #6 in the country at 135lbs by AWN, edged Massa 6-0, 4-1.
Mason state champ Conor Youtsey advanced to the 119lb finals, despite dropping a match in his pool. Youtsey won his first 5 matches before falling to Michael Nakagawa of Hawaii. Following the loss Youtsey won three period matches over returning Cadet Freestyle All-American Brock Banta of Idaho and Patrick Mucha of Washington to win his pool as Nakagawa was eliminated from the pool. Youtsey will now meet New York state champ and FILA Cadet National Champ Steve Keith of New York in the 119lb finals. Keith is currently ranked 11th in the country by AWN.
Jackson Morse and John Rizgallah are the final two Michigan Juniors to place in their pool. Morse, who is currently ranked 5th at 152lbs by AWN, lost to Jim Belleville of Washington who dropped down from 160lbs, where he is currently ranked 9th. Morse will be wrestling for 5th place while Rizgallah will be going for 5th as well at 171lbs. Rizgallah went 4-2 in his pool, losing to returning Junior Freestyle All-American and 5th ranked Lee Munster of Illinois.
The Junior Freestyle Finals will go down tommorow morning at 11:00am Vegas Time - 2:00pm EST.
