Cadet Freestyle Day 1 Recap
7/21 - The first freestyle wrestling of Fargo went down today as the Cadets hit
shifted from Greco-Roman to Freestyle. After the first day of Cadet Freestyle,
which included six rounds of wrestling, five Michigan wrestlers remain.
Jacob Schmitt and Adam Coon started out perfect in their quest to win Double
Titles. Schmitt and Coon, who won Greco Championships two days ago,
both won every match in two periods today. Among Coon's wins was a win
over arguably his top contender at 215lbs, Michael Kroells of Minnesota.
Coon is now 2-2 against Kroells this year after losing to him in the Cadet
Folkstyle Nationals and again at the Cadet Greco Duals. With the win, Coon
has put himself in the drivers seat to double up.
In addition to Schmitt, two more St Johns wrestlers head into Day 2 with
perfect records: Josh Pennell and Travis Curley. Pennell, who was runner up
in Greco two days ago, has positioned himself well for another trip to the
finals with six wins today, not surrendering a single period. Curley, who
earned Greco All-American honors earlier this week, went 5-0 today at
145lbs.
8th grade standout Zac Hall dropped one match today to Darian Cruz of PA,
but scored a big win over Dylan Akers of Texas who was runner-up in Greco a couple days ago and is a returning Double All-American. With a bye to start out tommorow morning Hall is guaranteed to finish Top 4 in his pool and earn All-American status.
The Cadets will resume tommorow and will wrestle through the conclusion of their pools, setting up the finals on Saturday.
